From the lens of the present, was the dam a success? Was it worth the ecological changes to the Colorado River or the earthquakes caused by the weight of the water on the earth's crust? And yet, it is what allowed LA to grow. And the sight of it (even in pictures, which is the only way I've ever seen it) can still make your spirit soar.

After reading other peoples' reviews, I feel a little better about not loving this book. I understand that the entirety of this book hinges on the last 50 pages, and that in order for those last 50 pages to have an impact, the first 150 really need to serve as a "day in the life," thing for the village. The reader needs to understand how life goes for these people, in interesting times or in uninteresting times, in order to full appreciate the changes that come with the Missionaries at the end. I understand that, but I honestly wouldn't have finished the book if it wasn't a class assignment because of it. I need/want a good, driving plot, and that's not how this book functions at all. It was interesting though, the way that the Missionaries and Villagers were portrayed against each other. Usually you'd expect a "these are the good guys, and these are the bad guys," vibe, but there was some grey area. That, I liked.

I am one of the millions who had never heard of Henrietta Lacks and I have only a vague memory of hearing something about HeLa cells before. By chance, I got to see the author speak and I was given a copy of the book. I know a few people going through cancer treatments, so it got my attention. Like many things that happen to the author as she's researching, this book seems to have found me at an interesting time in my life. Not only do I have a coworker and a friend fighting cancer, but as I was halfway through reading this book, my mom was diagnosed with cancer, too. If you are looking for a scientific paper on HeLa cell research, keep looking. This book does explain why these cells are very important and provides a good biology lesson, but it is ultimately about the woman, her family, and the stranger-than-fiction story of what has happened since Henrietta's cells literally took on a life of their own in 1951. Some reviews fault the author for including so much about her own journey in discovering the story and researching the book, but this enhances the book.

A AMAZING THRILLER MYSTERY HOOKING BOOK! I loved reading this book, turning every page made me want to read more, and I would be sleeping very late at night just to get to the last. This is one of the best books I have read and I will suggest it to most of my friends. This book deserves 6 stars, but it only let me put 5 :)
