Very unusual for a kids book - irreverent, a bit of bad language. The main character's mother is not only self-absorbed, but obsessed with the Hunt Club. The girl goes to live with her aging great-aunts in the woods and finds she much prefers life there. Not for every kid - one of the aunts found her mother's head when she was a girl - suicide by decapitation.

There may be none, outside of perhaps Rabelais, who may so decorously handle the refuse of the world. The Devil's Dictionary is a guidebook for the mind of man, and perhaps a certain delicacy becomes necessary when exploring something so rude and unappealing. There is perhaps no greater illustration that the answer of 'why do bad things happen to good people' is: because it is much funnier that way.

Scariest book ever! (You can't close your eyes during the contortionist scenes!) Definitely almost threw the book down at one point. While I was sitting in a busy cafe. During the Day. It's that disturbing.

Sucked a lot! It was interesting to hear about the Brady Bunch experience, but that was over within the first quarter of the book. After that, it was all about drug use and drama. Very dull. Couldn't even finish it.

This is a really creative and weird book that I highly recommend if you enjoyed Fight Club or any of this guy's other books. I finished it in 2 sittings...very addictive and quick read.

My boarding school was very different, but I definitely saw some of the "politics" that were "revealed" in this novel! Reading this book definitely took me back to memories of boarding school, some good, some bad.

This book is enjoyable, although I already knew much of what was discussed in here. It made some LA people angry, which is good. Basically, we're all screwed. but we already knew that.

A marvelous, somewhat dark novel about the fictional painter Charles Strickland (loosely inspired by Paul Gauguin). With his lifelong interest in the challenge of art and the life of the artist, Maugham was perhaps the perfect author to tackle Gauguin's life and rocky career. Maugham's abilities are at their best here, and the depictions of Tahiti are breathtakingly beautiful. The same goes for Maugham's descriptions of Strickland's (Gauguin's) Symbolist paintings. There's a pronounced misogynistic streak in Strickland (as there was in Gauguin), so be warned if that sort of thing bothers you. Also, Strickland is about as anti-heroic as they come. That said, the novel is stunning, and reveals Maugham's usual preoccupations with artistic creation, sin, and the Problem of Evil.

When Ernest Fletcher is found bludgeoned to death in his study, everyone is shocked and mystified. Ernest was well-liked and respected, so who would have a motive for killing him? Enter Superintendent Hannasyde who begins to uncover the complexities of Fletcher's life. It seems the real Fletcher was far from the gentleman he pretended to be. There is, in fact, no shortage of people who wanted him dead. Then, a second murder is committed, with striking similarities to the first, giving a twist to an already complicated case. Admittedly the plot itself is not that complicated and you ought to be able to figure out who did it pretty quickly. What I did like were the characters involved especially the Bible-quoting policeman. How he manages to get through the entire book without being grievously assaulted is surely a thing to be marveled at.
