This is a gem of a book! Addie is 12-years-old and has just moved into a trailer with her mother in a questionable part of town. But Addie is an optomist and makes the best of every situation. She makes friends at her new school and in the mini-mart near her new home. She tries out for Orchaestra and makes the select group, despite her struggles with reading the music. Addie even hopes for the best for her difficult, often absent mother, who has time for everything but her daughter. Addie longs for a normal life and gets glimpses of it when she spends time with her step-father, Dwight, and her two younger half-sisters. I laughed, I cried, I loved this book!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found the first book in this series tedious, with the second getting better, but the third book truly enjoyable. The problem would be that I don't think you could read this book on its own. Getting through the first two books (only with the encouragement of friends) was difficult.

I don't know how he does it, but Campbell's writing style by itself is disturbing. "The Face That Must Die" is one of the high watermarks of psychological horror.

From the mind that brought you "Get A Life" and "Cabin Boy" comes more of the same. If you don't like this book, you probably spend a lot of time poring over fabric swatches and drinking "Smooth Move" tea.

Man, I keep reading these books, and being frustrated by the copy editing. (Just because the word is spelled correctly and has similar letters doesn't make it the right word, argh.) But I continue to buy these books - yes, I own the whole run - because there is a Pretty Good Book aching to get out of all of these books. (If only someone could put in *question marks*. Or to remind the author that Kris is still injured after the first 50 pages.) The story arc with the teenager is not nearly as annoying as last time. I *did* have trouble keeping everyone's computer's names straight - there's a lot of characters, with the doubling. But some things moved forward (although some didn't). Minor plot annoyances, but nothing too drastic happened. Although if Jack marries someone outside the core group, I am pretty sure I *will* quit the series, gods. But...as yet I guess I'm still reading them.

Utterly forgettable fantasy that makes LoTR seem nuanced.

As I populated the subjects of this book in my review, I realized why I probably didn't enjoy this book. Although for some, maybe this was a redemptive, uplifting story, for me it was all depressing and negative. Here are the subjects that stood out for me: Refugees, Death, Grief, Nigeria, race relations, Suicide, widowhood, adultery. No wonder I didn't enjoy it. To top it all off, the female characters written my a male author did not ring true for me at all. Sarah was so non-emotional a lot of the time that I felt it was obvious that she was not written by a female. I didn't believe a lot of her reactions after the death of Andrew and although some of the passages narrated by Bee were very lyrical, I just couldn't give this more than two stars. Sorry Mr. Cleave, maybe next time.

I have always liked Anna Quindlen books very much. And looked forward to reading anything new by her. But, this one was just too sad! It was torture to read it!! I would not recommend it.

I read this for a bookclub and was really resistant to even starting it. As it turns out, I ended up loving it - I was completely annoyed by most of the book but it made me think. Objectivism vs Socially Acceptable Mediocrity!
