The blurb on the book is correct. It does make you look at the world differently! I expected this book to be kind of stuffy, but it was enjoyable and the author used interesting examples to illustrate his points. I used to love Sesame Street when I was a kid, so I particularly enjoyed reading about what made that show successful. The Endnotes point out some interesting books for further reading, so I'm going to add a couple of those to my reading list!

This is an anthology for the Kindle compiled by Lee Jackson, proprietor of the website The Victorian Dictionary, which anyone who has some interest in either Victoriana or London will surely have stumbled on at some time or another. If you have visited the website, you'll know what a great resource it is, and you won't be surprised to hear that Jackson has compiled an anthology full of curious and interesting snippets about such subjects as a 'B' meeting, a baby show, a balloon ride, bar-maids, bathing, bazaars, bed bugs, beggars, bicycle races, Billingsgate Market, black eyes, blackmail, the Blind-School, Bloomerism and burglars. And that's just the Bs.

** spoiler alert ** There are two short novels in this book: Quiet Days in Clichy and Mara-Marignan. I liked them equally. They both take place in Paris, in the '30s, with the same fictionalized Henry Miller and his friend. They are broke and hungry for most of the time; when they get some money they quickly spend it on food, wine and prostitutes. There's a lot of sex, objectification of women mixed with random acts of generosity.
