I liked the idea of this book, but not so much the narration. I wish Diane Ackerman had written it as though she were the Zookeeper's Wife, rather than telling the story from the thrid person. True, that might make it a "fiction based on a true story" book rather than Nonfiction, but I think it would have made it a much better read. That being said, I really enjoyed it because the story gave a very interesting perspective to a brutal war, and the lives of the Poles of Warsaw who were affected. Having family from Poland, I am glad to have read this and now want to see if any of my ancestors were experiencing the tradgedy described in this book.

The Tamuli was where I hopped off the Eddings train. It just got to be too much. There are still pleasures to be had from these books, although at close to 30 books (counting the Belgariad and Malloreon whose characters are just barely distinguishable from the ones here) these characters are starting to wear out their welcome just a bit by now. But they are still good company. And Eddings' dialogue, though getting just a tad stale by now, is still amusing. Somewhat atypically for a fantasy author it's the scenes between the fights and between the traditional "action" that are really the best. Eddings "action" never really has much tension because his protagonists are never even afraid themselves, they're never worried that they might lose. And it's just tiresome. The main question in these books is always just FINDING the enemy so that they can smash him. There's always trickery, trickery, trickery so that they don't know whose neck to snap. Then when they get to the bottom of it in the last book of the series and know where to go, they just go and kill everyone that needs killing. There just isn't that much at stake in these books.

** spoiler alert ** Read this for our bookclub and based on a friend's suggestion. I found the author's style to be very smooth and he did a wonderful job transitioning the different periods and characters in the story. I also found the characters to be well developed and fairly reasonable. A few issues: Genet becoming a revolutionary was a bit over the top. I also did not like when the Shiva/Marion characters merge at near the end of the work. All and all, worth the time it takes to read it.

Wow. For such a fantastical premise, this was much more emotionally resonant and culturally relevant than I expected. The desperation of the extreme poor is well painted, and the dismissive attitude of the more fortunate rings true. I enjoyed the animal-companions and the concept of the "animalled" and their relationships.

Tom Robbins has such a magical way of writing. I fall in love with all of his books!

An eye-opening overview of the prevalence of woman-hating ideas among right-wing Christians. Patriarchal theology keeps women in sexual and domestic slavery, not only in the fringe "quiverfull" movement itself but among followers of evangelical superstars like Mark Driscoll and John Piper. Joyce's writing style is plain and journalistic, and could have used some editing of run-on sentences. But she does a great job showing how disparate sects are united by a rape culture and a racism-tinged anxiety about Euro-American Christians losing demographic ground.

Oh, this was truly an unexpected pleasure! Definitely interested in reading more about Sookie in the rest of the books!

One of those novels that is so well put together that I end up loving it despite the fact that on paper it's not my cup of tea. I think the key to this one is brilliantly crafted characters, particularly the protagonist Paul.
