Although slow moving at times, it gives great discriptions of the historical development of Brooklyn before it was part of New York City. It also has the sub-theme of three sisters running a gin distillery plant by themselves after the death of the father. it is interesting to see what happens as the novel progresses

Considered the bible of North American birds. Beautifully illustrated plates painted by the author himself.

Great fiction, if you don't mind thinking a bit. It is better the second time around, but better to read it once than not at all.

Bleeding Violet Simon Pulse, 2010, 454 pp., $19.99 Dia Reeves ISBN 978-1-4169-8618-8 In a quiet, calm, regular suburban neighborhood, a girl waits in the night. A quick check under the doormat reveals a key that lets her into her mother’s house - the mother she’s never met. Hanna looks around at the sparse surroundings, at the colorless furniture. Her mother catches her in the kitchen, making a sandwich. And after a short conversation, she finds out about a certain problem that her newly-discovered daughter has. “Rosalee stopped pacing and looked down at me, tight-lipped. What I need is not to have to chase after a bipolar disordered kid. If she thought that name-calling would put me in my place she was sadly mistaken. I prefer manic depressive, I told her, if it’s all the same to you. It’s much more explicit, don’t you think? More honest? But really can you call me whatever you like as long as I get to stay.” So with a barely consenting consent, Hanna stays. However, as she goes to her new high school and meets the people of the town, including Wyatt, a mysterious fellow student, grapple with what seems to be live glass, she realizes that the town that she wanted so badly to become part of, might not be exactly what it seems. With its exceptional plot and wonderful first person point of view, Bleeding Violet by Dia Reeves was charmingly written. The first person point of view made me feel like I was right next to Hanna, seeing the things she saw, and sharing her experiences. The plot was creative and unique, so I didn’t feel like I was reading a book that I read before. There were many twists and turns in the story that made reading it an adventure. There was sufficient character development and the characters were realistic and portrayed honestly. Reeves let the characters take a life of their own, letting their flaws show, plus their emotions were all really authentic. The book was fast paced which made it addictive. My one complaint is at times Bleeding Violet can be graphic or disturbing, and has many gory scenes. All in all, I feel that this book lived up to its potential, and was a highly enjoyable read. One of the strengths I saw in Dia Reeves’s writing is that she uses magnificent descriptive writing and a first person point of view to really let the reader get inside Hanna’s head. This helps the story move along and be out of the ordinary. Bleeding Violet is a perfectly paced book. Some books have slowly paced sections, or the whole book moves along slowly, which can be frustrating. The only con of this book is that at times it could be a bit graphic or disturbing. I would recommend Bleeding Violet to anyone who loves fantasy or paranormal romance novels. I think this book is more geared towards girls age 14 and up who like books like the Twilight books by Stephanie Meyer. This thrilling tale of a girl, and the town that just might be the death of her, will be sure to leave you captivated. - Julia

It was a fun adventure story. A little younger than the young adult books I prefer reading. I can see it being enjoyed by it's target age group -- 7-12 year olds. But I enjoyed the intensity nonetheless.

The thing I love about this author's works is that are real. Not as heart wrenching as Love Aubrey (thankfully), although I was teary at the end. Wonderful! It is always refreshing to read stories where the characters are good people of all ages. You have to unlock the secret of the eight keys yourself.

Here again, I picked up a book that was out, by one of my favorite authors, and read it and then realized it as not the first in the series... ughh I liked it, but did not love it. I felt all the Paranormal activies and "everyone has an auora" or some kind of "gift" got to me a bit. I can't decide about reading the others. I LOVE this author, so probably will. But not my favorite of her stuff.

As expected from Gogol, this comedy came out with underlying criticisms. In the story, the commotion began in town when gossip about the imminent arrival of general inspector was heard. Anton Antonovich, the mayor, set out to impress the general inspector despite the poor governance he had. The problem was that the general inspector came in disguise, and no one knew exactly how he looked. So Anton Antonovich hastily spot the alleged general inspector and started to make an approach. The story is refreshingly vibrant and irreverent with a lot of reckless characters and phony dialogues between them. Even with all those things, it can always find a way to make you laugh.
