The Replacement is an eerie, dark tale about monsters that live underground, missing children, and secrets. Yavanoff spins a tale that is so strange and intriguing, you can't help but dive in and let the dark mysteries engulf you. Then... just when you expect the explosion of a crazy, messed up world... it falls kind of flat. Sad, I know. I had high hopes for The Replacement. Come on, this story line is gold. Children go missing, replaced by monsters who die shortly after. And Mackie, the male main character, just so happens to be one of those monsters. He survived. Against all odds. Except now, sixteen years later, he is dying. And only the dark world he came from is able to save his life. I loved the darkness. The nonstop unsettling feeling. When I read this synopsis, my mind went wild with where this book would go. So, what happened? The majority of the book talks about Mackie being sick. Or getting sick. Or thinking about getting sick. I get it: He is allergic to iron and blood and church. (Something, I have to say, I still don't fully understand...) But he was just so... weak. I understand weakness. No one is perfect. But Mackie didn't have weakness: he was just weak. Secondary characters. Roswell was awesome. Almost too awesome. Perfect and smart and caring and handsome and... we get it. Then there is Tate. Oh Tate. Tate is the female interest. And to be honest... I could never get a fix on how I felt about her. She was angry. Then seductive. Then pissed off. Then kissy. Now, I get that teenage girls are fickle, especially when their younger sister has gone missing and has been replaced with a dead monster. But still... I honestly can't say I liked Tate. As far as world building goes... it was there. Just not as much as I craved. I would read entire pages and find myself wondering what just happened. I would reread sentences trying to grasp what the character was trying to say. As soon as I met the underground people, I wanted to be in there world and their world alone, but it never happened. I loved the idea of this story. Gosh, I adored it. But the execution was... Meh. Why on Earth a town would just sit around for generations, as every seven years children were swapped out for look alike monsters who would just croak... it is beyond me. I never was able to grasp what made the town so amazing that everyone wanted to stay. I would get out of dodge, fast. (NOTE: This book likes the use of the "f-word" and has a few semi-sexual scenes as well. For those of you who prefer to stay away from that content, here is your warning.) Yavanoff has skill. I will give her that. To think of this story, to let your mind go there, is quite something. I am very curious about where her writing career will go, and will definitely be following her along the way. As for The Replacement... it was decent. Not amazing, not horrible. It didn't take my breath away, but I didn't throw it across the room either. If there is a sequel ever, I am not sure I will read it. Still, The Replacement was a nice fix for a semi-horror craving. I liked it. For maybe some reason I can't fully explain, I liked it. The plot and writing is what saved it from a lower rating. I would love to give it more, but the monsters might get me.

The movie came out more than a decade after the book was written, and there are a hell of a lot of differences between them. When Sagan wrote the book, the USSR was still the USSR, and the fact that the US and USSR are able to work together to build the machine is a huge deal. Also, in the book, 5 people go instead of just one. Both the book and the movie are excellent, and if you liked one, you will like the other. The book is rather heavy in math, but I have no brain for numbers whatsoever, and didn't have much trouble following at all.

As has been said before, this book came highly recommended. So many people told me how great it was. It seemed a great premise for a book and I was sorely disappointed. In fact I couldn't even finish it, which I almost never do. I tried several times but I found it very dry and the interesting parts were few and far between.

I think any book that has the power to make you think deeper, and outside your box is worth reading. The "wind" was knocked out of me at some parts, apalled at what happens in other cultures, other lives. I'm so glad this this is among college reading material. I look forward to reading to next two books.

Toujours dans la série des récits en rapport avec le diable: La main droite du sire de Giac (1 étoile): Je n'ai pas vraiment aimé cette nouvelle-ci. On n'en arrive au coeur du récit annoncé par le titre que dans les dix dernières pages (sur 50 plus ou moins) et cela passe de manière très (trop, à mon goût) rapide. L'idée est assez banale et le dénouement prévisible. Le début de l'histoire était assez intéressant, mais est nouveau raconté trop vite, un peu trop comme un résumé et est trop dissocié de la fin: les deux parties semblent réunies de force, artifiellement. Décevant. Histoire d'un mort racontée par lui-même (1,5 étoile) : cette histoire m'a davantage plu que la première, surtout par le fait qu'elle était plus développée et moins rapide, par sa mise en scène qui plonge le lecteur dans une ambiance propice et par sa fin qui crée un effet de surprise. L'auteur lui-même reçoit le manuscrit de ce récit qui relate la réunion de trois amis dans une ambiance angoissante et propice à la narration d'histoires fantastiques. Pendant cette soirée, l'un des trois amis présents va raconter un récit qui lui est arrivé: l'histoire d'un mort raconté par lui-même. Bien que mieux déployée que la première, cette nouvelle est encore trop rapide à mon goût: Dumas raconte les actions sans s'attarder sur la psychologie des personnages ou à peine et semble presque pressé de terminer. C'est assez dommage. Un bal masqué (2 étoiles) : Cette histoire-ci est celle que j'ai préférée des trois. Le diable n'est pas présent proprement dit cette fois, mais on assiste à une sorte de bal-sabbat tant les personnages entourant les deux héros sont débauchés et hideux. L'histoire se déroule à nouveau extrêmement vite, sur une petite dizaine de pages, presque sans qu'on ait le temps de voir passer ces personnages. Cela rend l'histoire assez irréaliste et ne donne pas une illusion de vérité un seul instant. Une histoire d'amour tragique comme je les aime, mais vraiment trop rapide.
