I thought this book was so stark, obviously the point, but I couldn't wait for it to end. I know it's supposed to be depressing but when you feel your characters would be better off dead, it's not motivating to find out if they make it or not. I didn't like it but then again, I like to try to read uplifting stories.

Two young people meet unexpectedly. The female is devoted to developing her string quartet on which she's the 1st violinist. The male is a history major. Though the two fall in love, she resists advances that are at all intimate and we suffer with her about this as the relationship advances to the day of the wedding and her fears about how she will ever get through what will be expected of her that night. They're both virgins, and he's anxious to proceed but inept. We read of the various steps that take place as they near consummation, and it would be unfair to any prospective reader to unravel the plot further. It's all written deftly and thoroughly believable.

Usually, I don't much care for any philosophical/religious discussions, but I like the "truths" Krishna discusses here. All teachers should be taught the principles of Karma Yoga, in particular (I am mostly joking here).

Intense story....the author does a great job of transporting you to another country with vivid descriptions of the surroundings. A bit slow in the middle but it picks up and the family secret is revealed.

This book has lots of good writing. And lots of bad writing. And mostly it reads like the stories your weird bachelor uncle would tell you punctuating his comments with a gesture of his rocks glass full of cheap scotch. Or maybe that's just my family?
