An astounding book! Rarely does one come across such incredible writing. The vocabulary, sentences and imagery are extraordinary. it is a privilege to read such a book. A Greek island called Cephallonia is the home of most of the characters. Set during WWII when Il Duce invades Greece, aided by Hitler. The war scenes are gruesome. I did get bogged down in the war story half way through. I was disappointed in the ending. The separated lovers predictably unite, but 50 years too late!

I discovered Barbara Kingsolver through my high school Spanish teacher, first reading The Bean Trees and then her other fiction successively. I immediately loved her writing style, being both relatively simple and beautiful. I was also pleased to read the works of a Kentucky native like myself. The Bean Trees is still my favorite of the set, but all of them have true merit and ring really true to me.

4 stars – Contemporary Romance/Erotica/BDSM I’m torn between giving 4 or 5 stars for Wicked Burn because although I enjoyed the writing, story, and steamy eroticism for a contemporary romance, I really disliked the characters, so I’m settling with 4 stars. Vic and Niall waste no time in scorching the sheets, and I liked the whole ‘how do we go from a one night stand to something deeper?’ aspect of the story. The sex scenes are smoking hot, but left me feeling cold because I never felt a connection between Vic and Niall and Vic’s bedroom demeanor is callous, selfish, and distant. Actually, Vic is a cold brute in and out of the bedroom, so he really rubbed me the wrong way on all fronts. Niall is a passive doormat who not only tolerates Vic’s cruel behavior but begs for more, even though she separated from an abusive husband...go figure. Both characters had lots of emotional baggage, and I felt like instead of taking the sex-will-fix-us route, Vic and Niall were in need of some honesty and good communication. I’m a fan of good BDSM erotica and can appreciate D/s relationships with the best of them, but Vic’s cold dominant behavior just plain pissed me off. His whole ‘you’ll take it or else’ got old, especially since he never showed a tender or soft side, even when Niall's sad and painful past is revealed. Overall, Wicked Burn is a really good story with lots of explicit, blistering hot, erotic sex scenes, but I just didn’t quite feel the love. Still, it’s worthy of 4 stars.

fun reading, covers very interesting material, though not so much to do with economics as a science. Ideas I liked: "If morality represents an ideal world, then economics represents the actual world." "So the conventional wisdom in Galbraith' view must be simple, convenient, comfortable and comforting -- though not necessarily true." "Working together, journalists and experts are the architects of much conventional wisdom."

This is another one of my childhood favorites. I can read this book over and over again and still find myself crying. I have read all the books that came out after that (many don't know that the story of these 4 young girls continues in many more books). I don't read many classics, but this one definitely transcends time. Highlight - Louisa May Alcott was a big fan of women's rights. Her characters were very strong women, especially Jo, who ends up running her own business and never considered marriage as her only option in life (as did so many women in that time). I really do like the fact that she made sure to test society's expectation of women at that time to be totally dependent upon man.
