Despite a tendency to be a bit hysterical, and an odd drifting toward eastern mysticism, I found the details he marshaled to be persuasive. Of course, as an atheist, I am the choir that he is preaching to. But there lies the problem: virtually no theist---the group that most needs to grapple with this book---is going to walk away from this book smacking their forehead and saying "Oh, I was so wrong!" They won't even be reading the book. Like with the recent Dawkins book and so on, it is encouraging to know that there is a market for these ideas. The wider they spread, the better for our culture. It is still disheartening to realize that in this age wonders we live in, reason---the only tool we have for asymptotically approaching truth---has to be sold to the public at large.

This was on my summer reading list, the summer before 6th grade. I made a declaration to my mother after the first few chapters, "If I really have to read this book, I AM NOT GOING to middle school!" She proceeding to lock me in my room for a few hours each day "so I could concentrate." Unfortunately, neither one of us realized the damn cartoon movie played on the Disney channel at least twice a day that summer. Needless to say, I was not a big fan of Lord of the Rings ;)

Mesmerising tale of the east end of London in the mid 20th century. Some heart-warming stories, many infuriating. You can learn from it the universality of the human condition across time and place; or the extraordinary changes that have taken place in the course of a single lifetime. Poverty and living conditions that are inconceivable in Europe or America today, that was then entirely unremarkable. It does repudiate the notion that true progress is impossible. Then there is the man who returned from the Spanish Civil War with an unidentified prepubescent peasant bride. Today, we'd (rightly) lock him up for child molestation and human trafficking. Then, the author attended the birth of their 24th child, and observed the "pervert" as an exceptionally warm and accommodating paterfamilias.

So far so good I must say that I am glad I read about this book in a mag and decided to grab it up! So sorry to get back so late in regards to this read. I finished less than a week after this review. It was a fabulous read, rather easy considering I had already read Pride and Prejudice. It was great to see where and when the zombies and mayhem would be thrown in. I recommend to anyone who loves Jane Austen, although I know that there will be mixed opinions.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a very poignant yet original love story. It was a tad confusing at first with all the time jumping but once I got used to the format, it wasn't a problem. It was a very enjoyable read.
