I enjoyed this book. It kept you wanting more. I still haven't decided if I liked it or not but I think I did.

Let me preface this with my Earthsea background. I read the first 3 books when I was young and loved them. Then did them again on audio a couple years ago and enjoyed the 1st and 3rd books but thought the 2nd one was slow. Then I read -Techanu- and thought it was more like an interlude with a plot added in at the end for good measure. -Stories of Earthsea- was barely passable and now this -The Other Wind- left me with a final bad taste for a series I loved for a long time. It was nice to hang out with some old friends (Ged, Tenar etc...) but at some point toward the end it started this downward spiral into incomprehensibility. There would be a section I just didn't get but I'd just move on hoping that it would make sense later. It never did. When it ended I had no idea what had happened. Was it just too simple? I do see a lot of reviewers saying that the ending was predictable. I don't even know who was still alive at the end. It seemed like a bunch of snippets of action that never got resolved. Was it some type of literary experiment? I'm not sure, but my final stance on Earthsea is: Read the first 3 books and pretend the others don't even exist.

An amazing but not entirely entertaining book, Spinrad's Nabokovian turn sees him inhabiting an alternate history where Hitler emigrated to NY and became an sf illustrator and writer; but The Iron Dream isn't the story of Hitler's alternative life -- rather, it's the science-fantasy novel that he would have produced in that alternative life, his Hugo-winning Lord of the Swastika (1953), which tells the story of Feric Jaggar's pure-blood crusade against mutants and mind-controllers in a post-post-apocalypse. That's the second, longest part of Spinrad's novel which also includes an "about the author" on Adolf Hitler, and a critical Afterword by Homer Whipple (1959), in which the state of the world without a political Hitler is revealed to be not particularly better than ours with a political Hitler. On one hand, this book clearly takes sf as its target, pointing out that Hitler would have understood and enjoyed many of its power-fantasies and much of its wish-fulfillment violence. That's a cutting remark, one some readers missed (Spinrad reported that one fanzine review said they enjoyed the book, but wondered why Spinrad had to bring in that extraneous Hitler bit). But one of the difficulties in reading this book as a true artifact from a time that never was (as Jameson says in a different context, as if the Aztecs had developed their own forms of cinema) is that the book also takes our history as an obvious referent, with various characters showing up in veiled form (Goebbels becomes Bogel, Rudolf Hess becomes Ludolf Best); thus the second target of the book is the history that its hypothetical author could not have known. That somewhat spoils the imaginative purity of the book as an artifact that couldn't exist (as if the Aztec movie production just happened to make Gone with the Wind ).

Shigeru is my favorite character from the series so I wanted very much to read the installment about his story.I loved it.The prequel was definitely better than the sequel. It had very strong moments and I liked his love story with Maruyama Naomi though I was a little surprised that she appears in the book after the middle of the story. It would be better though if this was not the last of the series I read but the first so that I wouldn't know the way the story was going to develop.

A friend of mine bought this for me for my birthday (and for my psycho dog). Nothing revolutionary, but a pretty good dog-training pep-talk.

This book differs from Austen's other books in many ways, but I found it simply delightful. Featuring a heroine who is very young in many ways, the story is inextricably tied to her obsession with gothic novels.

I really enjoyed this book. As I mentioned before, I think it really made me want to go and find out more details about what we really know about life during her time.

I can't believe this was a debut novel. I can believe it took seven years of research to write. This was amazing, and I went through this doorstop of a book in only a few days. I want more. :(
