Have you ever read a book that left you so connected to the characters, you feel like you could cry when it's over because you just aren't done "knowing" them? That may sound bizarre, but that's what happened to me when I read this book. I practically forced it down the throat of everyone I knew when I was done, but luckily, everyone who took my suggestion LOVED it as much as I did. Not only was the character development excellent but the plot was gripping and truly unpredictable, you never knew what was going to happen next. This has got to be one of the best fiction books I've ever read, right up there with "The Kite Runner."

In all the years I watched John Walsh help America solve crimes on America's Most Wanted, I never knew the story behind the disappearance of his son Adam. I was very interested in learning about what happened to him and the affect his disappearance has had on how missing children's cases are processed. I was stunned to learn how inept the investigation into his abduction was and the willful pride of some of the officers in charge of his case, who refused to work with outside departments or investigators at the expense of dismissing crucial evidence. I'm amazed at the resiliency of the Walsh family in the face of their loss and the long years without any answers. I think Standiford's account was as rambling and jumbled as the case, and could've used some editing. I was also disappointed not to read more about how this case affected others that came after it. Still, I appreciated learning more about Adam, and have gained a new found respect for the service John Walsh has given other victims of crimes.

I recently re-read Dirk Gentley's Holistic Detective Agency and realized it was not as good as I remembered so I approached my re-read of Tea Time with some trepidation. I remember loving this book, really loving it. Perhaps it might be better not to read it again. I'm happy to report that for me, the book holds up. It's funny, it's weird, it has Norse gods. I love it and it remains one of my favorite books of all time. I was also reacquainted with a paragraph that I remember fondly from reading this book long ago: "Yes, it is true," he was saying, "that sometimes unusually intelligent and sensitive children can appear to be stupid. But, Mrs. Benson, stupid children can sometimes appear to be stupid as well. I think that's something you might have to consider. I know it's very painful, yes. Good day Mrs. Benson."

Some of the stories delivered on my expectations but I also found an echo in the later stories. Had a read something like it already in the collection? I would recommend Senna, though.

W.S. Merwin meets with Ezra Pound, locked up in a sanatorium, and on that Delphic advice, proceeds to buy a house in Occitan France shortly after WW2. So begins a lifelong affair with the language and culture of Languedoc, which Merwin champions as the soul of the lyric tradition, the mother tongue of the sonnet, sestina, villanelle, and all the other innovations which the troubadours brought over Persian winds into the courts of Southern France. Part memoir, part literary history, and part travelogue, Merwin occasionally overindulges himself in descriptive passages veering away from prose, but it's always pleasant and never so sustained as to forget his reader. If Merwin wrote more books on these subjects, history may well consider him the better guide than his old, mad mentor ever was.
