I made the mistake of starting this series at the same thing I started another series and unfortunately I read the other series first and now I don't even know if I want to come back to this series. I've never been a huge fan of Anne Rice and I didn't particularly like her Mayfair Witches series which I had read prior to The Vampire Chronicles, but a friend convinced me to give these books a shot. I left off shortly after his mother is turned into a vampire. The book isn't bad, but I don't know when I'll actually finish it because it wasn't interesting at all to me.

This book, a gift from Sandy Bryant, was nice to curl up with, though it moved slowly. I couldn't wait to read about my new "extended family" - the adventures of Reuben Land and Swede, as well as admire the great and admirable faith of Jeremiah Land.

Also, her mom was fun and the lesson of not being so hateful is a good one for Janice to learn. And me. Wait a second...

I was really interested in the story behind this story and because of that story it is hard to say anything less than glowing about the actual novel, that said I didn't love it. Just as I was getting into it, was able to keep track of the characters and wanted to know more about them, the first part ended and the second had a whole new set of characters. Probably all of the stories would have come together at the end, which was never written. In this case you are left wanting more, not because that is how the author intended but because of she was taken prisoner and sent to her death at a concentration camp before she finished.

Siobhan Fallon's You Know When the Men Are Gone is a collection of short stories about military spouses at Fort Hood TX during the Iraq war. I usually struggle with short story collections, but Fallon is so skilled at crafting these stories with detail and emotion that the individual stories leave me as satisfied as a novel. Not since Elizabeth Strout's Olive Kitteridge, have I enjoyed a short story collection so much.
