the purpose of this book is to examine the history of the american language - but i found it much more interesting as a general history of america. it's a great traveling book - easy to keep reading due to the numerous interesting tidbits that bryson presents, while not so gripping as to keep you in the hotel more than necessary.

This book is so different from the first...but still so good. In this book, you also got to read from Viola's point of view, which although it made me like Viola even more, I very much prefer Todd's voice. His voice is so full of FEELING, you can't help but just go along for the ride - as sad as the ride is in this book. I like Todd so much because he does fall, again and again, but you understand why and you root for him to pick himself up again and again. He's the hero, but he makes a lot of mistakes and he cares that he's making them and it just breaks your heart. There are so many good twists and turns and heart-wrenching things that happen in this book, you can't put it down once you start. I can't wait to find out how everything plays out in the final book.

This was a sweet little book, just what you would expect from Liesl...I mean Charmian. She writes about the things you want to know, going into detail about her time on the set of "The Sound of Music" and how it was to work with the other actors. Julie Andrews really was that nice, Christopher Plummer really that attractive, and the kids really that close. (....and I'm thinking "I KNEW it!") She does talk a little bit about her life after the film, but it's interesting how none of the child actors involved in it have ever been able to totally leave it behind because fans just love the movie and THEM so much. Charmian did do some more acting and actually ended up as an interior designer for clients like Michael Jackson (...I know. What sort of alternate universe is that where Michael Jackson and Liesl hang out??) I thought this book was a great little read because I love that movie. I really do. Not as much as some of the fans she mentions in the book like the little English lady who saw it 940 times in the theater (that's every single day for years). But I do love it. And it was very fun to read nice things about how it was made, and who the people were who loved to be in it.

I'll admit, the first time I read this book I was overwhelmed . . . but at the same time I was intrigued. I read it again a few months later and have read it a couple of times since. It seems I catch more and more each time I read it. A fantastic story, very involved, and more than slightly terrifying. I loved it.

I love Kitty Pippen books. I may not make the exact projects she presents, but her designs are inspirational. She very cleverly combines traditional fabrics with Japanese inspired fabrics.

I love it when a biographer can keep himself from imposing his personality on his subject and Fischer does this with his book on the life of Ghandi. Straightforward, with a solid overview of the events of a lifetime and their impact on the world, this is a good book introduce you to a great man of peace.

The year is 2020 and evidence of life on another planet has been discovered. The Jesuit community sponsors a space mission to the new planet, from which only one person, Father Emilio Sandoz returns some 40 earth years later. He does not return unscathed and his unfolding story is alternatingly thrilling, uplifting, and ultimately horrific. The book explores themes of religious belief and faith as well as friendship, family, and cultural issues. It is one of the most creatively written and tigtly woven storylines I have read in a long while. I have ordered the sequel, Children of God.

Not as engaging as Karon's Mitford series, but I did like the conversations sharing what Christian faith means.

If you're trying to find a book for reluctant guy readers, this is it! The book is about three 15-year-old boys, Dave, Victor, and Curtis, who are told by their fathers that they have to get a summer job. They decide instead of working, they will tell their families they got jobs and instead start Project Sweet Life, making $7000 with doing no work at all. They encounter bank robbers, discover secret tunnels under the city, and even do makeovers for women at a retirement home but still find themselves coming up short in earning their money! It's a fast paced funny novel with adventure, intrigue, and clean verbage. There is no foul language and only a brief mention of homosexuality in that the main character, Dave, has Uncle Brad who lives with his friend Uncle Danny. And that's about all! It was a FANTASTIC book and I will recommend it to all of my teens!
