The narrator tells this story from her perspective as a child going through the capture of Phnom Penh by the Angkar and her family's subsequent evacuation and internment in various labor camps. Many parts of it are wrenching, especially told from this angle, because the reader can clearly see just how this terrible history affects a child's growth and witness how her intense hate for the Pol Pot regime develops. Very powerful, definitely not a light read but captivating nonetheless.

One of my favorite CS Lewis books, and that means alot. I'm still working through a few of its premises but that takes nothing away from the power and vision of the book. Great stuff.

Two young basketball stars are found dead in a small town. One of the persons turns out to have been from the small town. The deaths are ruled a murder-suicide, and accepted by most. Two people in the town however aren't so sure. Sheriff Harding Williams and local reporter Bradley Gifford feel perhaps it was instead a double murder. The bond between these two characters, with its foundation in the past, grows and deepens as they slowly piece together what led to the deaths of these two young stars. I was intrigued to read this book after reading the back cover. Unfortunately however I did not enjoy the book as much as I had hoped. At times I found it difficult to distinguish which character was speaking. Parts of the dialog came across as being melodramatic. The development and descriptions of the characters was done well. I was able to easily create a mental picture of each one. I received a complimentary copy of “The Ripple Effect” as a member of the Dorrance Publishing Book Review Team. Wow-what can I say? Mack's daughter was kidnapped while on a camping trip and they did find her bloody clothes but not Missy. One day he got a letter from "papa". That's what his wife, Nan, called God. He followed the instructions about meeting at the Shack, That's where many questions were answered! Each paragraph made you think and wonder about our every-day lives and how we live.

A whirl through small town Rhode Island in the late 1960s, with three delightful and fascinating witchy women as the main characters and the Vietman War in the background. A mysterious stranger moves to town and hell slowly breaks loose. Not the same story line as the movie, in case you have seen the one with Susan Sarandon, Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jack Nicholson. This one goes a different direction and is more satisfying in the end. Filled with the wonderful descriptions of nature and personalities by Updike, making the whole effect a huge pleasure to read. And it only takes a few hours after all.

I've been pretty tough on Dean Koontz lately as I've been rereading a lot of his books. The Face of Fear is long on plot, a little short of characterization (with the notable exception of Harris), and suffers the ill fate of an abrupt climax. The action flows until Koontz gets hung up on climbing details, and then it flows again until the ending which feels, after a suspenseful build, a bit rushed and slapdash, almost as if Koontz was just tired of writing and was trying to get the story wrapped up. Mostly good, but it still feels as if a few changes could have made this a better book.
