This book is a deliciously satirical look into the world of Vanity Fair. In this world, you'll see the rich vainly attempting to keep up with appearances, when, as a matter of fact, they live on nothing a year. In this world, you'll see the poor desperately clinging on to ruined reputations, while they try to support their wives and children, who are doomed to go hungry and uneducated. In this world, you'll never quite know who to trust, nor can you be sure that your friend today will remain as such tomorrow. Here we meet the charming and witty Rebecca, a woman who started from humble beginnings and made her way from the bottom of the rubbish heap to the most elegant of society (though not necessarily in that order). We see her pace to and fro while she attempts to lead herself into comfort and prosperity- what with all her shams, lies and benevolent dictatorship over whoever she may set her hold upon. Here we also meet the beautiful and timid Amelia, a girl who lives almost without a care, owing to her snug little place in the world. She falls in love, meets a lot of new friends, and is made to bend over to the will of those more powerful than her. The two meet, live how they can, and somehow end up deeply within each other's stories. They amuse their audience with their comedy, their tragedy, their romance, their drama. They liven up the stage with their dealings- from how they honor the king himself, to how they snub the servant who brings them their chocolate. Most importantly, however, they live their everyday lives in the kingdom of Vanity Fair, showing us readers the rewards, the banquets, the people, the routine, the pretenses, the dealings-- in short, the good and bad of everyday life. I thoroughly enjoyed Thackeray's lovely and sarcastic narration (I honestly can't get over how he called Dobbin a hypocrite!), as well as the brilliant (and not-so-brilliant) characters of this little play of a book. I enjoyed the care placed in the descriptions on the dates, the settings, the personages; I enjoyed how I was taken from the palaces of Brussels to the humble houses in London. A lovely story, with all its good, bad, ugly scenes. Interestingly fresh and quite applicable to daily life, even today. Definitely a refreshing and humorous read.
