This book was super cute and entertaining! I had never read anything by Tera Lynn Childs before, but had read good things about her mermaid books. When I was offered an ARC of Sweet Venom, I pounced on it. First, I loved the plot of this novel. Triplets, separated at birth, who are descended from the gorgon Medusa. It's their job to protect the world from the monsters and other beasties who managed to escape their own realm and pop into ours. Gretchen is very accustomed to the monster killing routine. She's been saving the world, one monster killing at a time, for over 4 years. Grace and Greer are a whole other story. They know nothing of their heritage or a world where monsters can make a cameo at any moment. When the world of the three sisters collide, both hysterics and monster ass-kickings ensue. I love mythology and a lot of YA is currently employing mythological references in their plots. I love how Childs re-wrote the mythology we know and tailored it to fit her novel. Mythology is YA is definitely my favorite trend right now. I also loved that this novel was super quick to read because you just couldn't put it down. I had to know what was waiting around each plot twist. I also really enjoyed the light quality this novel has. The plot of Sweet Venom could have been very dark, but it was almost upbeat. There was the right mix of mystery, action, peril-inducing situations, without angst and a lot of the darkness that generally surrounds this kind of tale. And then there's the triplets themselves. Love, love, love Gretchen, Grace, and Greer! They were all so different with really unique voices and unique lives. I was totally engaged by them. I love that they were very human despite not being totally human. The 3 Gs are great characters. I really enjoyed this book. I cannot wait for the sequel!

For me it was a brave topic that could have been done better--an easy read of a most complex set of subjects.

the best of the Cohen books I've read. All are fairly short books, mainly meant for younger readers, I guess. But this one had some interesting stuff I didn't know.

i seriously enjoyed this completely left-of-center story... definitely falls under the "page-turner" category. now that's it's been awhile since i read it, i'm finding the creepy parts are the ones that really last... get under your skin and stay there. but an excellent read, i'll do it again.

Unconvincing narrator, condescending, patronizing, less than successful end. Other than that it's an OK story. Note to middle aged white guys - think twice before writing as 13 year old black island girl.

YA Beehive 2012 After reading the blogs on this book (which I usually never do), I really didn't think I would like it, but since it was a Beehive book and I got it for free from the school district I thought I would give it a try. And I am SO glad I did. (that's why I don't read blogs) An interesting plot concerning genetics, gives this futuristic novel it's edge. Gaia is a young midwife who lives and works outside the Enclave, the wall that separates the have's from the have nots. She must advance the first 3 babies she delivers each month, to be adopted and live inside the wall in luxury. When her parents are arrested she must find a way to rescue them. Her first action inside the Enclave sets her up as a criminal and a heroine. I really liked the characters, and writing style of this book. I look forward to reading the rest of this series. Not for Elementary.

** spoiler alert ** This book was alright. But the monetary currencies were a bit confusing at the start as Kinsella referred to English pounds and then quids, and I wasn't quite sure of the difference between the two. The book was pretty good, although I expected it to be better, nonetheless it was a fairly easy read. Although, the way it was written, it was like Rebecca Bloomwood was in serious debt, and wasn't interested in her job and then the next second she was excellent at her job, and she was dating Luke Brandon, and all her debts were nearly paid off. I just feel that it went way too fast. I'm not quite sure if I would like to read the rest of the series. I shall have to see.

This entire series blew me away. It was my first introduction to the story, having never seen the film or read the book (I have now seen the film and greatly prefer the manga). Be warned: it is highly graphic in its violence, there is A LOT of rape, and the ending is far from cheery. That aside, it explores the characters' motivations in detail, giving each participant in the Battle a rich backstory. It is possibly a little discomforting to realise that I, as the reader, became as engrossed a voyeur as those in the story who watched from their living rooms. Perhaps I should give Big Brother another chance.

Profane and wickedly funny satire...I laughed out loud. Thompson is deft with language, even as his narrator is in a constant state of intoxication. (I read this book as a sorbet between long periods of reading Shadow Country by Peter Matthiesen; Fear and Loathing's flights of gross anarchy came as a relief to Shadow Country's somber genealogies.) It is dated, but only in a way a time capsule is, its references to early '70's culture and counter-culture more descriptive and evocative than anything that could be written with the benefit of retrospect. Some of my laughter was in appreciation of Thompson's soaring hyperbole in his equating the madness of Las Vegas and its underground to the American Dream itself. I have not seen the movie, and I don't know that I will, as Thompson's descriptions of outrageous people and drug-induced foulness is much funnier left to the imagination. If there is any guiding literary weight to the book, it rests in snippets of (I assume) are actual newspaper articles depicting sordid crimes and other unusual incidents. Thompson reminds us that these shocking vignettes actually render his hilariously criminal behavior rather benign in comparison.

This book was handed down to me by my sister-in-law. She didn't give me any insight or hints about it. After finishing, I have SO many questions about it. Talk about needing to pay attention to details!!!!!
