So far I'm not quite sure what to make of this book. I am reading it to my 5 year old son as he goes to bed. He hasn't told me to stop, but I don't think he's finding it very captivating yet. (And we're currently 75% done) We'll see. I think this will be one of those books that I might appreciate more at a later date. It is a nice little story that is well told, but didn't do a whole lot for me beyond that right now.

I read this like I read most books of short stories--if the story doesn't catch my attention, I move on after about 2 pages. That didn't happen very often in this book. Most of the stories were moving and a few were truly riveting. Good writing and interesting characters.

** spoiler alert ** Young Vampires in Love is book one in the Young Vampires erotica series by Mardi Ballou. This story is about Lynette and Darlene, two young vampires who spend their days lazing around in their sweat pants. The two friends are surprised with an impromptu visit from their creator, the Comte. The Comte is displeased with his vampires for their dull and boring lives, which has put them up for nomination in the most dull and boring vampires category for the bicentennial vampire awards. The Comte is enraged by the damage this will do to his reputation and orders the ladies to find ways to spice up their lives. He suggests a trip to a sex shop and a sex club, for starters. The girls head straight to Happy Humping, a sex shop, and both meet good looking men with experience. Lynette goes for a drink with Nick and Darlene goes to Jon’s home to watch a DVD. Both women find new experiences and love with the men. The Comte returns and after discussion, turns both men into vampires. He takes photos of the couples having sex and returns to France to present the proof that Lynette and Darlene are not boring and should not receive the award for dull and boring vampires. The story set up was lame, but most erotica has a lame story line. The sex was hot, but an acquired taste in some cases. I enjoyed this book, but not enough to continue the series.

For all the hilarity and spoof-ness of this book, I'm still giving it four stars for creativity. I thought the book would merely insert zombies every now and then to Austen's prose, but the author actually created a world in which a zombie plague exists. The characters' behaviors and histories all change accordingly: the Bennett sisters have been trained in the "deadly arts" by a master in China. A walk to town means to have swords and muskets in hand in case they are attacked. Elizabeth is still headstrong, and even more fierce as a deadly warrior against the "unmentionables" and somebody who would kill someone if her honor was crossed. The militia's main purpose is to protect the countryside against the zombies. The fates of all the characters are similar yet different - most drastic being that of Charlotte Lucas and the annoying and dreadful Mr. Collins. Mr. Wickham's actions are even more deplorable and updated to be more specific. As the original P&P is one of my favourite books, and one I've read countless times, each detail changed was interesting and usually led to me laughing out loud. The great thing is that the main storyline, the love story of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, though changed in some basics, remains just as good. There are zombies all over this book, but it makes sense - it was so strange to realize that. Oh, and Darcy makes tons of double entendres about balls (the ones you dance at and the ones men have). I think I cracked up the loudest at these moments.

The premise of "Thinner Than Thou" is awesome and the sole reason I picked this book up. I tried reading Kit Reed's "Enclave" and found it...crappy, to put it nicely. Unfortunately, it appears Reed and I are just not going to get along. I hate her run-on, stream of consciousness writing style. It works for some writers, and it works in some situations. But when every single one of your characters is narrated in the exact same way, it gets redundant, ridiculous, and old. Fast. There's sporadic language, but the perversion meter is really off the charts. I'm not sure why I suffered through this travesty of a novel. It was only vaguely interesting. I get that it's supposed to be all allegorical for our current society blah blah blah, but seriously Kit Reed. Get over yourself and quit writing horrible books.

Just saw the movie... thinking about reading the series- backwards. Maybe I've been influenced by Alice and Through the Looking Glass a little much lately. This book was great and hard to put down. I see why there was so much anticipation for those that stuck with Harry from the beginning. It's something really special, the way she timed the books. Harry Potter and his friends feel like nonfiction.
