Gurion ben-Judah Maccabee would have us believe he does not intend to start a war. He would have us believe that he might be the potential messiah, or that he might not be. His essay regarding potentially potential messiahs might be the fulcrum upon which this massive novel pivots. I have the spent the better part of the last year reading this "scripture," a herculean task, and I am left astonished, as if I'm saying goodbye to an old friend. "Ambitious" is the wrong word to choose for Adam Levin's first outing, "sprawling" sells it short, and to call it "inspirational" does no justice to the dozens of micro-novellas swirling just below the surface. I will say that it's strange to think that four days in Aptakisic junior high school in the suburbs of Chicago can span more than 1,000 pages, but perhaps it's not so surprising when the events which transpire reach biblical proportions. They begin innocently enough: when Gurion ben-Judah, a Torah scholar who has been thrown out of no less than three schools for violent tendencies, falls in love with a red-headed girl named Eliza June Watermark. Gurion fancies himself a prisoner of Aptakisic's CAGE program for troubled youth, and emerges as the charismatic leader of "The Side of Damage," a mutiny against the arrangement that swells to disturbing heights. This is a novel written by someone who has no fear. He casts aside the boundaries that so many others tiptoe around, and to think that he's willing to do so in his first novel may serve as a harbinger of bigger and better things to come. This is not a book for the faint-of-heart or the impatient, nor is it a story for those unwilling to commit something of themselves to the task. Every page is layer upon layer of plot, metaphor, implication. It's rich and it's heavy, and it makes no apologies. "Seven skinny cows cannibalizing seven fat ones as dreamed by a man who'd never dealt with cattle: that, with its crystal-clear one-to-one relationship between the symbols and what they corresponded to-and without anything extra, without spilling a single drop-that is what I believed a prophecy was supposed to look like."
