John Waters has said that he's proud that his films have no socially-redeeming value. In that way, I think he's proud of this book. I know I certainly enjoyed reading it. Crackpot is a collection of non-sequitor essays from one of the most eccentric but also one of the most articulate of authors. His stories are engaging, gossipy, thought-provoking, interesting, catty and informative. My only complaint with his books is perhaps more editorial than anything else -- some of his essays/parts of essays seem repeated across more than one book. I wasn't exciting about reading the same stuff multiple times and I may not have even noticed had I not gone on a "John Waters binge" after hearing him speak at Boston Public Library and subsequently read all of his work in a matter of months.

This book is NUTS! It kept me entertained though it was quite disturbing, I would read the sequel!

4 separate, yet interwining stories of 2nd generation Chinese-Americans' ambivalence over their immigrant mothers' traditionl values. Their relationship is a classic Kundera-style tale of identity, memory and inheritance. Through their mothers' lifes, they realize that had they been in their mothers' shoes they, too, would have had a similar mind. The irony was not lost to them; alas, having been brought up in America instead, they finally saw the sad inevitability of the differences between their mothers and them. it begs the question: how much of my identity belongs to me, and how much is the result of a collective inheritance from the society? as the world becomes more globalized and more people yearn for greener pastures abroad, this book serves well to remind immigrants of their racial/country baggages (their collective memories of their native countries) and how futile it is to ditch that and, at the same time, take up the memories of another country in a bid to gain acceptance.

An important read to add some insight into what other girls go through during those tough preteen years. I don't recall having a particularly insecure teenage experience. Maybe it was thanks to Judy Blume.

Not my favorite Mercy book, but pretty good. There were 2 main aspects of this book, the pack bonds going awry and a Fae object of power in the form of a book. I felt that the 2 aspects of the story were a bit disjointed, so it didn’t make for the best book of the series. However, I’m glad that Samuel seems to have been redeemed and given a new breath of life. I think that the pack/mate bond issues could have been developed better and made into a whole book. The Fae thing, well there has already been a Fae themed book, so, this one didn’t quite measure up. The villain, a Fae queen wasn’t explained very well, her identity came in at the end, and the end wasn’t very well developed either, I could have used just a bit more development through the whole book, I guess. Well, all that being said, the book was very enjoyable, quite entertaining. I am excited to read the next book in the series, River Marked, and I hope that Mercy and Adam get the chance to have a real relationship without other parties trying to tear them apart.

I was worried that this book was going to be the same as the first 4 in this series. She took such a different angle with this book and I really enjoyed it. I love Sadie's character! Fun read!

This is a very moving book, especially given the setting in Paris and environs of France during WWII. This books is only 2/5 finished given the heart breaking story of Irene Nemirovsky and her family during the holocaust. A moving story and I would have liked to have seen the book played out in full.

Probably made sense in its time, I guess? Because it doesn't now.

This could have been an excellent book, but it just didn't quite make it. Certainly the horrible subject of a mother who becomes overwhelmed with motherhood, even to the point of murder, provides lots of material. But the contrived mechanism of a psychic who can reveal her entire family history is just too unbelievable, and distracting from an otherwise good story. Harrington does a good job of describing husband Tom's pain and emotions. I wish the author had found a different way to present the family history, though.
