Rosenfelt is finding his voice, this book was much better than the second, in my opinion. Andy carpenter is a fun character. The twists are getting better and the stories are more compelling.

This is a good novel for a teen/tween who is having trouble communicating with their parents. It follows a high school girl and her friend through their daily activities and crushes and gets you involved with the characters, and you learn that one girl's father is still mourning the loss of his wife while ignoring the girl and the other girl's mother is a recently divorced "man-hater". The book deals with their problems and how they unsuccessfully try to solve them before they eventually open up and learn that communicating directly is best for everyone.

This is a very engaging story of the deep impact of friendship if we are willing to be open and vulnerable with one another. Holly, Saffron, Olivia, Tom and Paul have been friends since early school days. Once reaching their late teens their lives take different courses. They haven't been together for 20 years, but suddenly a reunion is planned because of horrific tragesy in the life of one of them. Each one of them has a story to tell of the impact of their early friendship on their life over those 20 years and also how the tragedy that brings them together is the catalyst for change in their lives indivisually and as a new beginning for their friendships. This is an easy read and yet I found it a very thought provoling book.

Virtually all of the story takes place in a series of prison camps where the protagonist agonizes over going back to Communist China (and to his ailing mother and his fiancee) although he is not a Communist or to Taiwan, which is not home. Well told, but just nothing I could really care about.
