This novel starts off strong and uncompromising. It's the story of a young girl who gets kidnapped and sexually abused by her kidnapper. It's the story of her survival and struggle to live any kind of life after such abuse. I didn't like the ending and the way it sort of became one of those Oprah How-I-Survived books. I found all the God talk distracting and the ending a little wishy-washy, but it was a fast, enthralling read. Warning: there is some graphic descriptions of the main character being abused, but it's not unnecessary and works with the story and style.

I liked this story but was unhappy with the author's presentation of it on three counts: 1. The title is misleading. The story is mostly about a scientific expedition in South America, and not about Isabel Godin...who is not really a mapmaker's wife either. Her husband was an assistant whose main contribution was setting out poles to make measurements. This was noteworthy, but had nothing to do with map making. 2. Isabel's story starts on page one and goes to page five before the author digresses into history, botany, politics, speculation, etc., etc....and finally catches up to where it left off on page 230. 230??? Seriously??? I think I'm going to need something stronger here than 'digress'. 3. Some of the speculation that the author indulges himself in is clearly for over-dramatizing his material. The horrors of being lost in the Amazonian rain forest are painted in bloody reds. I felt my inner soul cringing in mortal fear of his next quivering adjectives- certain that I would soon perish in the unimaginable misery and excrutiating agony. This book is clearly two books. Both stories have interesting elements and perhaps neither would have been published alone, so perhaps what happened here was necessary...but I didn't appreciate the chosen approach.

If you need a guide to raise your boys to be the men that God designed them to be, this is a must read. Robert Lewis's Mens Faternity study uses this book as a reference in some of the teaching.

I found this third “Undead” book to be rather anti-climatic… or maybe non-climatic would be a better word. When I got to the end, all I could think was “That’s it? Am I missing pages? Were chapters left out of my ebook?” Not a lot happens here. Basically, Betsy finds out she has a half-sister who’s really the daughter of Satan, goes a little crazy after reading the Book of the Dead for too long and has to apologize to everyone, has one confrontation where she finds out some important facts about her new half-sister, and finally admits that she loves Sinclair. And… that’s it. Maybe we find out more about this prophecy with her sister in the next book? All I know is that this one was pretty lacking.

Nimira, a once-royal transplant from a distant, exotic realm, is forced to make her living in her newly adopted homeland by singing and dancing at a lower-class music hall as a trouser girl. She is hired out of this life by a wealthy sorcerer named Hollin Parry to accompany a rather unique piano-playing automaton, which turns out to be a trapped fairy prince. In fact, hardly anyone in this novel is quite what they seem at first glance. Delightful fantasy that reminded me at various points of Jane Eyre, A Little Princess and The Secret Garden, all stories I am very fond of. However reminiscent some aspects of the story may be to these older works, Magic Under Glass makes a strong stand on its own as a fresh new fairytale. Nim is a compelling, compassionate character who, despite many trials, is never a victim and in fact does most of the rescuing in the story. My one and only complaint was that the book ended just as it seemed the action was coming to a head, and the novel itself was quite short - over too fast! However, as there are rumors of a sequel, I'll sit tight :)

So maybe this book isn't realistic to most real life "coming out in high school" situations. That wasn't the point, was it? This was an important book when it came out because it featured two gay characters - females too, the forgotten gay kids - who weren't crazy, who had dreams and goals, and who acted like real people. And they were happy. And they didn't kill themselves in the end or die terribly or end up with men. It was a real accomplishment at the time. That being said, why is it still relevant in a time where the world is full of media representation of non-psychotic, surviving gay characters? Because this is a little escape. The love story is different from what we see every day because it is treated very much like a timid and sweet love story that could work with teenagers of any gender. It is tender and not as sexualized as a lot of fiction - especially fiction for gay teens, who are apparently more sex obsessed than straight teenagers. It is very important to the anxious and the hopelessly romantic. It gives them some hope. I think that was the point of this book. Even if it may seem outdated, I think Annie on my Mind is one of the most important books for lesbian and bisexual teenagers. I know it was important to me when I was sneaking it home from the library my freshman year of high school and I would recommend it to anyone.

I enjoyed the book until the ending. As much as I hated the movie "City of Angels," I kept thinking this novel needed a twisted ending to match the rest of the story line. What would happen if the heroine died after Luc converts? Something was missing. I felt robbed.

This book loosely resembles The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time in that they both have narrators with autism, but there they diverge. The narrator of The Speed of Dark is Lou Arrendale, a man living in the near future when major developments have been made in treating individuals with autism. His work group consists entirely of people with autism. The group splinters when a new manager at the company learns of an experimental treatment that could cure autism, and demands that all the employees with autism participate. In Lou's struggle to avoid being compelled to be treated, major questions of ethics are raised. Even deeper, however, are more basic questions: if a person has always had an illness, a difference, who are they without that? If my depression were erased tomorrow, I don't know who I would be. Lou faces the same sort of void--the complete unknown.

Loved it, I had read The Tennis Partner a few years back and that was great too.

This was such an unusual book in the style and format. I loved those aspects. I especially liked the author's note at the end to have your people tell you their stories.
