This book just took me for one crazy ride. I really don't know how to describe it without giving away spoilers, but seriously, I don't think anything happened the way I thought/wanted/expected them to happen. I mean sure, I kind of got a happy ending in a sense, but it wasn't the ending I was expecting and it sure as hell wasn't the ride I thought I'd take to get there. Pretty much for the entire book I was like... "Oh, cool. That's pretty nifty. Hell yeah, beating the bad guys! Wait. NO. SHIT NO. WHAT THE FUCK NO STOP IT WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! oh phew... everything is ok... NO WAIT SHIT STOP STOP STOP. DON'T DO THAT WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU STUPID #*$&(@#*&$*#&$*#@%&)*@#$&!!?!?!!!!!.... oh wait... phew... FUCK YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.... etc. and repeat." Ok, that might be a slight exaggeration to my reaction, but I think it's pretty spot on. There were a lot of things that I predicted, it's urban fantasy... but there's a lot of things I didn't predict, so the roller coaster ride was enjoyable. Besides the catchy plot that threw me for a loop a couple of times (and threw my loops through loops while characters were going through loops who looped other characters... it isn't confusing I swear), I really liked the 'Unbound' world. The Skilled - who have special abilities allowing them to do some pretty crazy jank - were a surprisingly nice outlet of urban fantasy that I enjoyed. No faeries, werewolves, vampires, or other supernatural/paranormal creatures... just Skilled and unSkilled struggling in the syndicates of a pretty messed up city. It was a nice change of pace from paranormal activity. Now for the problems I had with the book... There was one very obvious problem I had with the book (or at least I felt it was obvious)... and this is a really super major spoiler so unless you really want to ruin everything about the book... don't read this! (view spoiler) Another thing I didn't like! Anne was annoying. I'm not gonna make another spoiler tag to explain why she was annoying, she just was. Ruben's wife who's name I can't remember to spell off the top of my head was also annoying. I mean, I'd be pretty pissed too if my husband cheated on me all the time with other women... but for her to single out just Olivia was kind of... overboard... I didn't see her death-threating every woman walking into his office. Maybe this was explained, not sure. Still thought it was strange. Now on to Cam. Who I liked and disliked equally throughout the entire storyline. (view spoiler) Other than that TINY factor, he was a pretty good hero. His stalker vibe for Olivia didn't creep my out nearly as much as sparkling vampires who watch people sleep. Just saying. And it also didn't creep me out as much as Ruben's stalker vibe. Seriously Ruben? Kind of extreme in the "I'm watching you at every moment and know who and what you're doing". Oh well. I guess it made things interesting. The viewpoints switching in between Cam and Olivia got kind of confusing. I'd start off a chapter used to the 'voice' of the character in the last chapter, and then get confused that it had switched. The first time it happened I read the sentences a couple of times trying to figure out what exactly I wasn't getting... only to realize I had switched from Olivia's head to Cam's. It really wasn't too bad though, despite the minor confusion. It kind of ruined the mystery of the 'romance' between the two characters when we could see what each of them were thinking though. It also kind of sucks this book ended on a cliffhanger. I guess it's kind of open ended so you can decide what happens, but now I'm going to have to wait a year to find out what actually happens. I really don't like when authors do that. I was going to read the next book anyways, and if I hadn't liked the book I wouldn't have bothered to get the next one even if the ending was a cliffhanger. Now I just feel this sort of empty feeling of inconclusiveness (which may be a result of me being tired as well... I'm not sure. It is four am...) that isn't going to be filled anytime soon. Overall, I'd give this somewhere between a 4 and a 4.5. I'd be hesitant to just give it a four, because I really did love it, but at the same time there were certain things that just bugged me too badly to forget. I enjoyed it. Maybe I'll read it again when I'm not completely coo-coo from lack of sleep - realizing now that I'm supposed to get up in an hour - and see if I still enjoy the book while fully functioning. For now, I'll stick with the four.
