Thud relies on repetition and numerous cute animals to tell its story of cooperation, bravery and tolerance. Basil, the littlest animal of the forest goes on a quest to find out who the monster is and how he can be stopped. In the process he joins up with all the other animals of the forest, all of whom are afraid of the monster. Together though they feel brave enough to confront the monster. Thud though isn't a simple monster story because the monster, while big and ugly for being so different is not mean and certainly not a monster after all. I won't spoil the ending though. Go read the book and find out!

Bloody hell - so rich, simple, heartbreaking. The characters are beautifully drawn, and although it deals with loneliness and loss I never found the work too depressing. One character's experience hearing the "Eroica" symphony: "Wonderful music like this was the worst hurt there could be. The whole world was this symphony, and there was not enough of her to listen."

William Blake rocks. That's my overall impression of this book. Entering into the world of London at that time, LAmbeth, and the circus was interesting, but overall, the star of the book for me was William Blake. I know very little of his early adult life, and in fact, wasn't even sure when the character was first introduced, that this was the Blake, despite having to memorize The Tyger for Miss Keith's English class, and the dead give-away of the title of the book. After reading I went straight to The Internets and plowed through loads of Blake's illustrations, which is what the book made me crave almost viscerally. As to the story, moments of brilliance, moments of "well that was no surprise" and kind of a "let's hurry up and tie up all the loose ends" ending. One of my favorite moments was early on, when Jem is contemplating the mystery that is Maggie. "She reminded him of Sept blackberries, which could just as easily be sour or sweet when you ate them. Jem could not resist such temptation"

I am a Wizard of Oz lover, the book series much more than the movie. Whenever I come across a biography of Baum I am sure to pick it up, so I was very excited when I came across this book on Goodreads when I searched for Baum. However, I never actually looked at the description of the book so I did not realize it was a children's book. I was a little disappointed when it finally came to my library and I picked it up and it wasn't what I was expecting. I did read the book, and it was an excellent children's biography. It gave a lot of great information, and I even picked up a few facts I had not known about before.

I started reading this in high school and couldn't finish it because I was so disturbed by both the language and the scenarios it depicted. So I tried it again a year ago, and I was still disturbed, but I made myself finish it. Primarily this book served to make me resolve a few things about what I will never do to my children...

Little slow at start but picks up and delivers a very good, hard to put down ending.

This book was so incredible. It really expanded my knowledge on a side of World War I that I knew a lot less about (besides the obvious bombings) - the non-German front. I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is well researched, and the depth of detail is amazing. You will learn a lot about the bounds of human capabilities, survival modes, revenge, pettiness, cruelty, and the experience that those POWs had during World War II. READ THIS BOOK. Seriously.

Started out pretty good and I enjoyed the plot, but the result of what became of the people in the town seems really extreme. Also, the author must be seriouly religious, because everyone seemed to get the need to pray every other page. It really distracted me.

It wouldn't be fair for me to give a rating to this book. Stross is extremely popular, and I have tried to read several of his books. I think I have started 4 of his books & only finished one.My conclusion is that he is a very good writer who just does not write what I like to read. The Jennifer Morgue is a fantasy/Sf take-off on James bond. Fleming fans who also enjoy discussions of the tech behind the adventure & do not mind a certain amount of vulgarity (When I read the word "ass" in the opening sentence of a book I SUSPECT it is not going to be my kind of thing.)will probably like it.
