I love this book. Kay's writing is so rich and involving that you can picture each scene like you're there. And the characters are so detailed and complex that you become attached to them...so much so that you dread the ending because that's all you get and by then you're craving for more. One of the best books I've ever read.

I can't believe I'm done with the "Perfect Chemistry" trilogy. I don't want it to end. I wish there's another set of books regarding their daughters and sons. No more Fuentes brothers for me :( I will definitely re-read this if I have time. I love Luis' geeky side. He's the smartest among the Fuentes brothers.

I read the unabridged edition. And oh my god, the tedium. The only character I was interested in (Queequeg) was practically absent form the book after the first 18 chapters, and I just...I couldn't bring myself to CARE about Ahab or his stupid whale. The asides on whales and whaling were snore-inducing. This was the book that had me convinced for years (until I found O'Brian) that books about Things That Happen On Boats are really written for men who enjoy manly allusive navel-gazing, and that women have more interesting things to talk about. Gah, whale. And yet, I do love parts of it. I do. It's just that what interests Melville is fundamentally not what interests me.

Wow, Cabeza de vaca is an amazing man! He basically walked from Florida to Arizona!!! Something even Forest Gump would be impressed with. He was shipwrecked and became a slave, saint, healer, preacher, medicine man among other things during his stay with native American tribes. This is a true horror story recounting how of many hundred only a handful of Spainaird sailors survived. Good stuff!
