Another excellent atheist manifesto. I think Dawkins is still my fav but Hitchens knows how to be aggresive, that's for sure. My cat knocked a bottle of water over on it though, and the cover is all woobly now. That makes me sad.

Once I really started reading it (yesterday), I found it an enjoybable story but not amazing. A bit slow at times with some oddities that were added for flavor and some subtle humor all added up to a decent read. The author did an excellent job of character description; I love that quality in a book.

So last week Tim and I started watching The Dresden Files, which is based on the series by Jim Butcher about a Chicago wizard. Anything with fantasy placed in modern times gets an automatic in from me, so I was all about reading the series after seeing the show. Despite its hokiness and predictability, I can see why Storm Front paved the way for a cult-like following. But I’ll discuss the hokiness and predictability, because that’s more fun. Our narrator, Harry Dresden, is never without the cheesy one-liner. For instance, before he kills a demon: “Please insert a coin to continue conversation, asshole!” Or while trying to enter the scene of villains: “Little pig, little pig, let me in!” Or, in irritated sarcasm: “No, I’m not Dresden the wizard, I’m Dresden the lizard.” Every once in a while there would be a laugh-out-loud moment, but the dialogue was mostly comprised with things that make you go “har har.” I also wasn’t impressed with the way the ties in the plot were ultra-obvious, yet they were played off as if they were supposed to be a big mystery with this shocking twist at the end. Yeah, there were a few elements that I didn’t expect, but for the most part the events played out exactly as I’d forecasted. That’s not to say that the readers who are stunned by the “twists” are less intelligent or have poorer taste--it’s all about reading styles and expectations. At this point, I’m partially turned on. The premise is charming, the characters likeable, and there is rarely a dull moment (referring to both the book and the show). So give me some time, and maybe I’ll be hooked.

I enjoyed this immensely. The language is simple and beautifully crafted. The ideas are simple and immensely powerful. The simplest things are often hardest to understand; Coehlo's writing is patient. Coehlo refers to a tiny emerald with the secret of the universe engraved on its surface. If there can be a literary equivalent, this is it.
