Alex is just out in her first London season, with her two best friends. They are beautiful, and their parents expect them to marry, while the girls themselves are not interested in such prospects. A mystery crops up surrounding Alex's lifelong (attractive) friend, the Earl of Blackmoor. I WANTED to like this book. But oh, where to start. How about with the fact that the only thing that qualifies this book as a Young Adult novel are the ages of the "protagonists." Otherwise, the story is better suited to 9 year olds. Alex, Vivi, and Ella are completely rich, spoiled, unlikeable, unrelatable, unrealistic, pseudo-intellectual characters. They read like Caroline Keene's Nancy, Bess, and George- only discernable by their apperances and their boyfriends. Much "historical detail" is given to describing their dresses and hair, much like historical barbies. The girls all claim to be so interested in Jane Austen, and are so caught up in being "clever" that every time they talk it grates against your ears. They say things like "this is of great import," and "he flashed a grin." The characters all laugh at what one another says, and think themselves spirited and independant, when in truth no one would even dare to assume as much except that the author keeps insisting that they are. The "romance" is based on the way the male love interest's shoulders look in his tux, and there is never even a question as to who the villain is, what he wants, or how the story will end. Like I said, a perfect story for nine year olds. If you what-so-ever value the regency period, stay away from this book. Or read it if you want a good laugh, as there is no mention of class issues, historical detail, or ANY form of realistic relationships between friends, parents, siblings, politicians, enemies, etc. I do believe that this book was only published due to the somewhat less misguided popularity of "The Luxe."

Gone with a Handsomer Man is a good, light mystery. While it did have unusual characters and some funny sections, I didn't find it quite as funny as promise. All in all, it's still an entertaining read, but of the light and fluffy sort which I am not likely to remember a few months after having read it. One of my favorite features of the novel was Teeny's cookbook. I found this to be a very interesting and unusual plot device, and it was one that painted a very vivid picture of not only Teeny, but also the women who came before her. Teeny herself is also quite likeable, so I sympathized with her predicament. The mystery has a good setup but is really implausible. This isn't necessarily a criticism because this sort of madcap setup works really well in a novel like this, much like it does in Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels. However, if you're looking for a good, well-drawn literary mystery, this is probably not the book for you. As for the ending: contrived much? This part really let me down, as I had enjoyed this book but found the ending abrupt, jarring, and an obvious setup for the sequel. Naturally, if you are going to be writing a series, you want to leave the reader hanging and make them anxious for your next installment, but I thought this was poorly done in this case. Final verdict: Good, frothy beach read.
