Frank has some really brilliant insights into the Bible, and how we have distorted Christianity into something more than what it's meant to be, simply--Jesus.

On a flight back to Buenos Aires from Bariloche, the person next to me, an Argentine priest who spent time in the States, recommended this book to me to read for my dissertation on the soul/psyche. I didn't read it right away, but it ended up helping me write a big chunk of my dissertation. Don't you love when that happens? I sure wish I got his name and e-mail to thank him. This is C.S. Lewis' retelling of the Eros and Psyche myth. It gives it a different spin, a little more modern perspective which portrays Psyche as more assertive through the eyes of her sister. As a result, one sees less the simpering, damsel-in-distress female that people usually read into the classic myth than a woman who grows through a decision to love in the active sense.

Really enjoyed this book...especially the details of bohemian life in Europe during this timeframe!

People like to talk about love and dedication and stuff, but few ever really admit that we are all motivated primarily by self-interest. Count on punishments and rewards, not morality or altruism. Once we see that core principle, we can see why certain systems work and why others don't. This book explores some of the examples that are less clear and less direct. I only give it 3 stars instead of 4 because I gave another book (The Undercover Economist) 4 stars and I consider that slightly better than this. But, really, check out both of them!

Wednesday’s Child, by Peter Robinson, A-minus, narrated by James Langton, produced by Tantor Media, downloaded from audible.com. Banks is called to the home of a woman whose 7-year-old daughter was seemingly kidnapped. A young attractive male and female couple came to the home and informed the mother that her daughter needed to be taken for some tests. They alleged that they were social workers from the government. The mother let them take the child, but when the child was not returned by the next day, she called the police. Banks and the superintendent both remembered the couple in the ‘70’s who captured and tortured and murdered victims and were afraid something like this was starting again, especially as time went by and they couldn’t find the little girl, Gemma, and when her clothes turned up on the moors. And then another grisly murder occurred, at first seeming not to be connected to the little girl’s disappearance, but Banks began to find characters involved with people from both crimes and started looking for connections. This was a very good read, the sixth in the series.

I wasn't as into this book when I first started it, but it very quickly grew on me. The only negative I can point out is that there are a LOT of characters and it can be really hard to keep track of them all. Incredibly hard. Despite this, I found the novel incredibly enjoyable and exciting with its twists and turns. I was oftentimes afraid to read ahead because I was worried about what would happen to my favorite characters and how they'd fair. Despite trying not to care about them, I did. It's a very well thought out world with incredible characters and an overall unpredictable plot. I highly recommend it for anyone into the fantasy genre.

This book paints a pretty solid picture of the landless movement of Brazil, but despite my left-leaning political preferences, I could hardly get past the leftist portrayal of this movement. It's not all sunshine and puppies, as this author might have you believe.

I had to read this book for a leadership academy I was in and I found this to be a surprisingly good experience. The book introduces and explains the concept of "emotional intelligence," which, since beginning to read the book, I see is so much more important than almost any other awareness one could have on a day-to-day basis personally and professionally. Don't be shocked, if, in describing the many levels of emotional intelligence or lack thereof, you immediately think of friends, family, and coworkers that fit these personality types exactly. Once you begin to understand the makings of emotion and how different temperaments react to the varying levels of emotion, problems of all sorts seem to make more sense than ever before. The book is laid out into easily-digested chapters which the readers can pick and choose through based on their interests in the subject (brain chemistry? leadership? family dynamics? improving one's emotional intelligence?). It will be a better world when emotional intelligence or "EQ" is regarded as much or more than intelligence in deciding the viability of leaders at all levels and in all segments of any organization.
