Original 2009 review: 3 stars The Running Man for teens. I was a little disappointed in the end, since I went into it not knowing that it was Book 1. Oh well. The wait for Book 2 begins. Although I'm not sure what the Book of it could be, I just want a little closure between Katniss & Peeta. 2012 re-reading reviewThis gets more stars on the re-read. At the time I originally read this, I hadn't read enough YA fiction to realize that a story like this, where every plot thread fits together well, where the love triangle is subdued and not thrown in your face with a lot of torn pining & debating, where the characters are subtle & not constantly telling you how Precocious! or Independent! or Quirky! or Different! they are with every word they say, where there's enough gross, compelling dystopia to keep you turning pages - well, a story like this doesn't come along very often. We've finally gotten around to watching the movie, which inspired the re-read (and my lucky husband just read it for the first time). I'm a tad ashamed to admit that when one major plot point that I'd forgotten about was revealed in the movie, it made me angry; sadly, I was rooting for a denouement that was so cliched it kind of made me wince. I like how Collins does it better than my version. On to Catching Fire!

An ok story. Some of the instances with the baby were totally unbelievable. Not sure if I would recommend this story.

After Emily Dickinson, the first poet I really loved. I bought this my first year in high school when we were given an assignment to memorize and recite a poem. From the poem I memorized: "the best gesture of my brain is less than / your eyelids' flutter which says // we are for each other; then / laugh, leaning back in my arms / for life's not a paragraph // and death i think is no parenthesis"
The book is full of short stories. Most are good, and some are exceptional, mainly dealing with immigrant themes. The title novella (Hunger) was one of the most moving and complex short stories I had read. Her language is really precise and beautiful.

Hold your horses, there... The woman taught me a lot of English. And I have hardly any shame left.

So fun for my simple, goofy mind. I love a good love story between wolves. This author has the wit and humor that is right up my ally. I must read more!

A totally positive book that made me realize how much my leisure interests help me love the person I am. I never realized until now how much my preferred leisure interests tell me about myself, lift my self esteem and make me proud to be who I am. A great read at any time, but especially when life is hard and when the only person who can help you is yourself.

Very good read about a bored little boy who is enticed to a house of magic. Not all is what is seems and things get a little creepy (it is Clive Barker, after all). Excellent writing and characters in this one.
