i enjoyed these books a truly inordinate amount. when will i outgrow young adult fiction??? i think i'll have to outgrow being myself before that happens, actually. i'm reviewing all three here because i practically read them as one book, in one sitting over the course of several days (that's totally possible). the first two are great, the last one less so though still satisfying in many ways. katniss, our main character, is awesome. i didn't know the main character was a girl til they explicitly tell us so (or rather, til her name comes up in the first one, because i doubt the name 'katniss' would be ever be foisted upon a boy). i was particularly struck by this because it's so rare to have a character rounded out without the conventions and stereotypes of gender rearing their ugly heads... katniss doesn't think about boys and makeup, but about survival, which is what carries her through the trials of this trilogy. even when our author dreams up a love triangle for katniss, as part of spin that will help her win the horrifying games she is forced to participate in by the totalitarian government of her homeland, she eschews the easy way out and allows katniss to be of two minds til the very end, all without expending much of her attention on the romance angle. that is probably the single greatest thing about these books- collins never takes the easy way out. the bad guys are clearly bad, at first, until we realize that the good guys are not clearly good, and that what is done in the name of power is rarely in the interest of goodness or what is best for people. katniss is a reluctant hero, concerned primarily with the safety of her loved ones more than fomenting dissent, and her confusions and indecision comes across as deeply realistic and appropriate to her character. when she befriends her littlest enemy because she reminds her of her beloved sister, when she mercifully kills her fiercest opponent rather than let him suffer at the hands of the capitol, when she kisses peeta but thinks about gale and kisses gale while thinking about peeta, when she mistrusts the rebel's leader despite everything she'd done for katniss's people, it all reads as true to life for a seventeen year old girl caught up in horrific events. she is not made to be some super genius, ultra moral, outstanding exception of a person; she's just a girl who wants to survive, and barring that, wants the people she loves to survive. collins does not make her some crazy superwoman, because that would be the easy way out. and the point is, that nothing's ever easy, like choosing who to love when that will be used against you and everything you stand for, or even killing when you have the righteousness of a cause behind you, because even righteous killing is murder, after all. i love the character of katniss, and it's the strength of her character and the realism with which she jumps off the page that makes the books so thrilling and hard to put down. i gasped, i jumped, i cried once or twice, and was ultimately more entertained and enthralled than i have been in a long time. perhaps the ideas are not freshly minted originals, and the writing can be clunky at times, but the freshness of the story lies in the urgency with which it is told, the authenticity of the sentiments behind the plot, and the vividness of its portraiture. i am not looking forward to the movies, where vast swathes of nuance will surely be lost and the grittiness that makes these books so interesting and real will inevitably be cleaned up and glossed over. but, because i am a good capitol-style consumer whore, i will probably watch them anyway.
