I loved it. The writing really put me into her world. She is a very talented writer to be able to pull off such vividness and smooth transitions, with writing it in the style of journal entries (which would generally have a very choppy feel). The characters and events are very entertaining and inspirational, and I think this was the first time ever that a book actually made me shed tears! I wish it didn't end!

A deeply moving coming of age in the real world novel. I first read it when my mother was slowly dying, and I was being one of her primary caregivers. It was during AIDS, too, and a beacon of promise that that can and will be life and possibly joy when it is all done. I was deliberately choosing uncomplicated work, it was not a great upsetting novel, rather comforting. I haven't got rid of it yet, so I guess I have tentative plans to read it again. It will come around again on the bookshelf.

I found this book slightly mystifying at times. Character motivations are all very bold and drawn in primary colours, but not always working from the same palette. Nonetheless, it mostly kept me entertained as a strange blend of Shogun and Battlefield Earth, but with a feminist, meso-futurist angle, all the way through to a fairly miserable (if suitably literary) ending.
