I only read the first half of the book; three short stories. Of the three the Amazon's Curse was my favorite. The other two lead into the Lords of the Underworld series. I'm saving the bonus guide for later after I have read more of the books so I don't get spoiled. *** I finally got around to reading the special content in this book. It was okay, but I didn't love it.

I didn't realize this was a comic book until I got it from the library. I read it in a few hours. I really enjoyed it. Depicts a boy questioning his faith, love and his ability to make friends. Not "preachy", not hypocritical, the author does a good job in portraying the life of a good guy who is trying to figure out how to be good.

The first third of this book was agonizing; I practically gave up reading altogether because it was such a dense read.^ After that, though, it became enjoyable -- mostly because I was past all of the dry introductory chapters (e.g., the geography, who ruled what, who married who, etc.) and into Eleanor's fascinating life. The book is well researched and thorough; it is definitely worth struggling through the early chapters. ^I couldn't simply give up reading this book rather than reading as a whole because my OCD nature won't let me move on to the next book without finishing the last. [insert pathetic sigh:] This also explains why I finished Honeymoon by James Patterson in its entirety.

This was a fantastic book, and I say this as a person who generally is quite bored with the fantasy genre. It certainly helped that I got sucked in by the show before I read the book. Literally the only complaint I have about this book is how long it is, and I think it's the shortest of the series. Sorry, Mr. Martin, but as great as that book was, I'm not reading any more of this series until you finish them all. I saw what happened to people reading Wheel Of Time. Forewarned is forearmed.

** spoiler alert ** Good, not great, and I wanted it to be great. The idea for this novel is a strong one. A gen ship on it's way to a new planet - people from Earth frozen for the 300 year journey. The people living on the ship a monoethnic group, living and working on the ship until they reach their destination, year after year, generation after generation living for the time when they reach land. Then one of the frozens, a girl named Amy is unfrozen 50 years before she's supposed to be. Sounds like a great story, yes? I couldn't relate to Amy or Elder for that matter. The "relationship" between the two is not believable to me. I'd think Elder might find Amy fascinating because she's different, but I'd also think he'd be wary of her. Amy was kind of bratty and annoying. Eldest came across as a future Hitler and the best character, Harley, well, you'll see what happens to him if you read the book. This story revolves around lies and manipulation. But, the problem is, the story is predictable. If you're like me, you figure out the issue with the ship, the people, the leaders, the murder, and why the unplugging was done. You can guess that these people are being drugged to keep them compliant, that they're DNA is being manipulated, and that they're never going to reach their destination, at least not this generation. Overall, I was disappointed.
