Disappointed with this novel, especially after having read The Gathering by Enright. One lovely passage about grieving while and through dreaming...dreaming while and through grieving... waking up to realize you have been grieving a loss you hadn't realized still profoundly affected you. Another moving passage, when the father with dementia, takes off his wig and stands on his head, and says to his wife, "like we were before..." or something like that. Before...when they were younger, playful, filled with joy, before he had a wig, before he covered up his vulnerable baldness, before he had dementia.

What an awesome book, its totally was great, when i started it i was already in it and love the fact that THE guy is there right away. And things hit off, the way she has to leave her safe zone and has to move away and with the fact that her mother and twin sister want her to be human and live a normal life, without her darkie which a really mean of them. But i love that she and Will are getting closer and omg the part with him at her house at 1am in the morning was awesome and when they were in his car and hook up, but with her darkie things end up being cut. And with everything that they are together and then end up with a shocker that gets them far and i was hoping they just be together and they DO, but they get this with her getting discover was a awesome shocker and with the fact that Will said that they will be together again soon, i was dying to know if they will just, i have to know with the next book. NEED TO KNOW

I loved this book. I can see now why my daughter read and enjoyed this book so much in high school. It's funny, heartbreaking, and presents multi-faceted characters who struggle with many of the problems that I think everyone can identify with; from bright yet insecure Charlie, to gregarious yet secretive Patrick to mysterious and lovely Sam. You can learn quite a bit from observing and listening, but, like the advice Charlie receives, you've got to participate.

I think I experienced every emotion I've ever felt reading this book. It was wonderful! Thomas Hardy has this incredible way of building his characters up and then chopping them off at the knees.

I enjoyed this quirky book. I liked the writer's style and the offbeat characters. The review calls the main character, Isabel Spellman, a cross between Dirty Harry and Nancy Drew. That's pretty accurate. I'll read the next book in the series.

The trilogy curse strikes again! I noticed the small print on the inside front cover that stated this was book 1 of a trilogy, but my mind wasn't ready to believe it until I finished all 579 pages and it wasn't finished yet! Overall I liked this book and will probably read the other two. I did feel there were some parts that were unnecessary or stretched though, so hopefully the next two books won't have so much of that.
