I'm not sure how I feel about this one. On one hand, it was very well written with extremely complex characters. The plot was engaging and I wanted to continue reading to find out what happens to these people. The author was skilled in writing a psychological thriller and delving into the minds of the characters. However, I don't think I've ever read about more depressing individuals. All three are in such denial to each other and themselves that they rationalize the lies they've created to build a life together. A life that can't go anywhere and is essentially a house of cards. They are all sad, lonely, lost people and continue to be up to the end. Quite the downer from the first page to the last.

From the economical yet haunting prose, to the lucid and passionate discussion of the nature of artistic genius, this book is a masterpiece. Additionally, Potok's characterization is brilliant. It would have been far too easy to make any given character one-dimensional, yet Potok skillfully paints even minor figures as complex, sympathetic, and human. One to re-read many times. I recommend reading it back-to-back with George Eliot's Daniel Deronda. The discussions of artistic genius, especially within the context of Judaism, have much to offer one another.
