I imagined watching a Tim Burton film as I read this. I noticed that the 'living dead contrasted with innocent children' idea are used in both several of Burton's films and in The Graveyard Book. I can see how this would be a popular book in some crowds - morbid fascination with the dead, mythology, and the young protagonist has supernatural powers. It was definitely an engaging book and kept me reading. Even though it was different than anything I've read, I did like it - it was different. I was disappointed at the end though, I thought it was a little anticlimactic. I had already guessed Mr. Frost was "the man Jack" from the beginning and so I wasn't surprised when he tried to lead Bod upstairs to kill him. What I didn't like was the explanation at the end about how the Jack of all Trades was an organization that would be doomed if someone could walk among the living and the dead. It just said that Bod was the one to defeat the Jacks, it didn't give any explanation why or how. It just kind of ended; with me wanting more backstory. As far as how to teach it, my students could pick out the mythology and nursery rhyme references and read other materials. This would build a background knowledge about the history and different people groups represented by those myths. Another idea would be to teach a lesson on the differences between myth, legend, and folk tale. How are the stories told differently in the genres and what are the stories often about? It's been kind of hard for me to think about how I could make these YA books into teachable material because as I'm reading, I just get sucked into the story and read it for fun and forget to think about it as academic. I guess I just need to retrain my mind to look at it more analytically instead of just reading for fun like I'm used to.

This is one of the most awful books I have ever tried to read. I couldn't stomach reading past the 3rd chapter. The way the story line is written, makes the characters talk and act like pre-teens. It was very immature and too much talking, not enough story line. I have never stopped reading a book because of the way it was written was like nails on a chalk board, but here's my first.

Well it was slightly better than I was fearing, mostly because I've got a soft spot for geeks in love but it was still painful to have all the repetitive passages about his loneliness. I do like that the author dealt with the issues of race and mixed race marriage, that was very nice and buoyed up the last section of the book with some sincere thoughtfulness. Glad I finished the series and the idea is still interesting, I just wish that there had been as much character development as there was in the second book. That's still the best one in the series.

Did not find compelling enough to read the sequels.

this book isnt necessarily a page-turner, but i read it at least 3 years ago and i think about it and reference it constantly. fascinating ideas that apply to all kinds of stuff.

While not as engaging as the first book in this series, this sequel held my attention and made me want more. The mystery is really secondary to the character development of Alan Bradley's precocious Flavia De Luce. Like its prequel, this book is fun to read.

Great book! Very well written, love the twist at the end. John Grisham-esque!

It was not so bad i did not just like the part of the them dissing the girl about her hips, but she was a good sport by laughing it off. A very good Julia Quinn book but easily forgettable.

She lays it all out for us. The penultimate chapter hits you hard. Real hard.

OK, I admit it, I read the FBI series. Usually they're ok as "escape" reading. Lately though, I am wondering if Coulter has just been phoning them in. The more recent books, this one included, are not nearly as good as the first two or three in the series. After reading this one, my initial reaction was "Really?! That's several hours of my life I won't get back." Psychic Savage?! C'mon. The premise of the family history of the killer in this one is just too ridiculous to take seriously, even for an "escape" book. I hate to leave a series unfinished, but I don't know if I can continue with this one-- unless the writing gets a lot better with the next one. If you want to try Coulter's FBI series, try The Maze, Target or The Cove instead.
