One of my professors said that everybody interested in Western thought should read The Confessions. He was totally right. It's one of those books that makes an entire tradition of other writing and thinking suddenly make sense. That doesn't make it an exactly gripping read, although Willis's translation is great and there is actually a plot in the first half, tracing Augustine's wayward youth leading up to his conversion. It's all incredibly dense, though, especially the last half where he starts in on this "What is Time and Experience" kick that is frankly painful. I recommend reading it in small doses because it takes a long time to process. Augustine himself is a great character: he is brilliant, very happy to tell you he's brilliant, also that he's right, and that salvation lies through Christ by way of Augustine. His faith is dogmatic and a little scary but also touchingly sincere. At the end of the chapter where he describes his mother's death, he follows standard early Christian convention and asks his readers to pray for her. It's a pretty impressive writer who can almost singlehandedly found a massive theological tradition and still can get me to pray almost without realizing I was doing it for a woman who has been dead for 1700 years, because he loved her and he asked me to. But don't read it if you have a headache. It'll just make it worse.

I feel as though every review I leave for a Steve Jenkins book is just a copy of the whatever I read just before... but he is that consistent. This artist is brilliant at picking subjects that awe and intrigue young minds and stretch them to think in excited and curious ways. Whether is merely the illustrator or the collaborative writer and illustrator, his books grab our attention, feed our curiosity and launch conversation and further reading. Thanks to Jenkins, my not quite 4 year old is getting to think about about elementary and middle school sciences in a way that is accessible to him and fascinating. This particular book divides the marine life into categories based upon the layer in which they dwell on the descent to the bottom of the sea. The pictures are a little scary but incredibly intriguing and the information is presented in a challenging but interesting text. All I can say is that this challenges the young reader to think of marine life beyond the beautiful pictures of colorful fish and dolphins. We love it.

Apart from 'explaining' how the TV advertising campaign was meant to have come about, I found nothing else of interest in this book. I suppose the very fact that a book (and lots of interest in Meercats) has come from adverts tells us something - but not really interesting!

Saw Carrie Fisher "live" the same weekend I listened to this book, which was a bit too much of her and her gravelly voice. Mildly interesting, especially the name-dropping parts. Would have been easier to tolerate in the print version. Great cover art, though.

The story of one man's life starts at his death, and you learn about his life through his encounters in heaven as well as memories from past birthdays. I loved the lessons taught and it gets you thinking of how important your life is. You really do impact a lot of people, some that you will never even meet. A very strong thinking novel.
