This one lacks the intergalactic space opera feel of most of the Vorkosigan books, and so I think it took me until the second or third re-read to truly appreciate the brilliance of this book. Bujold balances several fascinating interwoven plots, a huge cast of characters (including almost all of the Vorkosigan universe favorites), multiple romances, and detailed politicking all in one engaging, humorous, and eminently re-readable book. While preparations for Gregor's wedding march on, Miles is attempting to woo Ekaterin without her knowledge, Mark is trying to run a business involving bugs and an inept Escobarran scientist, Ivan is caught up in exactly the sorts of circumstances innocent bystanders abhor, Kou and Drou are rather appalled at some of their daughters' romantic choices, and the Council of Counts have some interesting voting challenges, just as Aral and Cordelia come home from Sergyar... My biggest complaint is the cover. WHAT WAS BAEN THINKING? It is the most hideous, inappropriate cover art I could possibly imagine. I am ashamed to be seen reading this book in public due only to the horrible, shiny, hideous excuse for cover art.

Really enjoyed this story and all the talk on fixing the house up. It's a fun read.

A friend recommended this book, and I dove into it because I like the idea of increasing happiness. Although I found the writing insipid, I stuck with it for a while because some of Rubin's ideas seemed valuable (e.g. reducing clutter to increase one's energy). But by the midpoint, there just wasn't enough content to keep me going. And I have to admit Rubin lost a lot of credibility in my eyes when I read (in a Goodreads review) that she's the daughter-in-law of Wall Street fatcat gazillionaire and former Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin. Can I relate to this woman's life? Can I trust her to report it honestly? I don't think so.

I had a friend who was obsessed with these books in middle school, but I couldn't get interested. I think it was because they were too hard for me at the time and I wasn't as into fantasy as I am now, which isn't all that much, but some. I always did like the cover though and have considered trying to read it again as an adult.

If I could have given this -1 stars - I would have. I hated this book. (and I say that with the risk that Tanya won't be friends with me anymore when she reads this review). You really should have a burning desire to read about the history of philosophy if you read this. I don't.

I choose this as a group novel with my recovery reading class because 1) shortish chapters 2) offers some informational text, along with the narrative 3) I could get a classroom set at the public library 4) I thought my class might be interested in the dog story It's working reasonably well for my classroom purposes, although it's not uniformly readable for my students. As a book for my personal tastes, it doesn't impress me much. The voice doesn't appeal to me--not terribly polished syntactically, and too often self-aware. (Not a big fan!) My kids are not totally compelled by it, either, but again, it does provide varied learning opportunities for applying reading strategies. And, I could use it for free. As far as dog stories, I much preferred The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Garth Stein.
