I found that this book dragged on pretty often. There were some very interesting parts but I'm less of a fan of this particular book by David Eddings than I was of the others.

This is a great book about the battle between good and evil. I liked that not all the warriors were mortal, and that there was ambiguity about the specific mission. This book would work well as a stand-alone, though I enjoyed the previous book. The plot was just fantastic. The characters, even those in minor roles, were deep and well-written. I liked the descriptions of the wealthy home in which much of this was set. The theme of the story seemed to be conscience, in the sense of moral compass. Does a sociopath really have none? Is it black and white or are there nuances? All of this was touched upon but the author leaves us to draw our own conclusions. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Overall, it's a good book. It's an interesting study of Socialism that is as relevant today as it was 50 years ago. It's heavy on political philosophy, so, if you're not into that, you'll likely not like the book. However, it is an interesting read for us Poli-Sci junkies.

Ah, the only thing that keeps this one from a perfect five star rating is the ending. I think, for once (amazingly) the movie did a better job of the book in that respect. I don't see how the Count can end up with anyone but Mercedes after all he's been through for/with/because of her. I love the plot though, all the twists and amazing revelations. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. And the characters are quite classic. I'm glad Mercedes has a bit of a backbone. Just a little snippet of a review for now... it's been a while since I've read it.
