This book is just... glorious. It's kind of epic and so moving and you hardly ever get to root for a heroine as much as within the pages of this book. I feel like a fool for tearing up as I remember it now.

Finally stopped reading this book....It just did not flow for me. Didn't care for it at all.

I thoroughly enjoyed this coffee table book. I thought to just briefly take a look at the book when it arrived in the mail and to put it aside for later because I was rather busy at the moment. That didn't happen! The book is so charming and humorous that I couldn't put it down! Two cats email each other to share tips on how to train their people. Accompanying the dialog are cute illustrations and plates with whimsical cat paintings that enhance the experience. It's a perfect book for the coffee table.

This is a retelling of the Rumpelstiltskin story set in a British mill town in the 19th century. So it combines a few of my favorite things: strong heroine, historical setting, an interest in cloth, and fairy tales. The setting is extremely realistic; the author obviously did a lot of research on how mills and the machinery worked. I also loved the portrayal of the heroine, trying to run a business and care for her family.

Lyrical reading. A heavy topic, but very well done.

If you have seen the Lecture on YouTube or read the emails that had been sent around then you have read part of this book. It was a good book.

Another fascinating historical account courtesy of Erik Larson. Expertly weaves Marconi's discovery of radio waves to a English murder mystery. Historical writing at its best.

Mary Gaitskill treats us to an array of flawed folk in this somewhat-seesawing-but-by-and-large-accomplished collection of short fiction. Ms. Gaitskill’s preoccupation is with the interior, and here we see her traversing the mindscapes of her characters with verisimilitudinous deftness. Although at times Ms. Gaitskill seems like she’s trying a tad too hard to wring something original from her prose, at others she transcends mere cogency and/or the corporeal via a blend of improbable metaphor and synesthesia. Her tales are most successful when anchored by some sense of imposed temporality (e.g. the two hours of a flight or the strictures of a babysitting evening), but even the sprawling, open-ended ones (“Stuff,” for example), while failing on some levels, achieve a remarkable depth of character. Ultimately, Ms. Gaitskill’s superior characterization, hyperbolic manipulation of language, and wicked sense of humor infuse this collection as a whole with a vibrant importance that is all but impossible to deny.

I enjoy teaching this book--I find students either love it or they hate it, but either way it makes for some interesting conversations about the role of government in society and privacy vs. freedom.
