This book is so moving. Gives you a different perspective on death and letting go. Lots of suspense and very heart wrenching. BTW, the movie is no where near as good as this book!

Anna Karenina is a long book. The Pevear and Volokhonsky translation that I read is about 850 compact pages, which took me nearly 6 weeks to finish. Considering that I normally read about 40 books per year, this one will certainly pull down my average for this year. But that's fine, it was well worth the effort and the time. I loved almost everything about this book. Leo Tolstoy's writing ability is as enjoyable and readable as any author I have ever read. I was constantly amazed at how much I seemed to be transported into the time and place of the novel - late 19th century Russia, with its customs and social mores and traditions that are so alien to my own culture. The depiction of characters and their inner thoughts and conflicts was also exceptional. I was amazed at how Tolstoy seemed to be able to put me inside the heads of all the major characters - he even describes the thoughts and point of view of one of the character's dogs on at least a couple of occasions. Great story, great writing, truly memorable.

I found this book interesting yet troublesome- I didn't like the fact that it mixed God/prayer with fornication..although it was a misunderstanding by the characters, it just seems wrong. It was pretty intense, never dull, but not worth the time.

Another talented voice to add to the vampy-were world. Thumbs up. A good YA read.

It's hard to give this book stars one way or the other, because the subject is so tragic. I live 40 miles from Modesto, and during the trial went to the courthouse which of course was so inundated with the world's press, in one way you want all the attention you can get to find and convict her killer...on the other hand it's disgusting how the media doesn't care, all they want is their exclusive. However, I remember from the beginning something seemed wrong in this case, at the time I thought, why does the husband seem so emotionless? Not suggesting I knew anything, it was just a gut reaction. This is a tragedy that never needed to happen. I see her photos with her family and how full of life she is...and it truly breaks my heart. I think sadly no matter how you come to Lacey Peterson the end result is the same, you walk away feeling, angry, sad, and frustrated for something that was so senseless. A woman who simply wanted to be a mother and wife. A man with an ego who felt the rules didn't apply to him.

I love all of Murakami's books, but I guess I'll limit myself to discussing just a few. They do blur together in my mind; the protaganist always seems the same, but this doesn't bother me for some reason. My favorite story is the one about the elephant factory. I chortled aloud when I read it. I don't remember why; something to do with the rationale for constructing elephants and why ears are the easiest to recreate. His characters accept the most bizarre situations with equanimity. I think his work generally has more heart than most postmodern stuff, despite the detached tone that usually prevades.

While I haven't read the predecessor to this book, I still obtained a lot of interesting information and greatly enjoyed my read. The copy I had was an uncorrected proof, so there were still a few editing errors. However, this book contained well-researched ideas and presented interesting claims for the reader to ponder. From exploring the Nazis and their ties to the occult, to psychic dreams, and even to the use of astrologists by former U.S. Presidents, this book opens the readers' minds to the idea that paranormal events occur in many aspects of life. As a college student working on my undergraduate degree, I actually had the chance to take Parapsychology, and so was familiar with some of the stories presented in this book. However, the Parapsychology of modern times does not match its early roots as described in this book. No longer is Parapsychology setting out to prove paranormal events, but rather is used to dispute claims ranging from spirits to religion. Personally, I find this to be slightly sad, and wish that Parapsychology would go back to its roots. Though skeptical of some things, I still believe that there are paranormal events that happen every day that cannot be explained away with science or reasoning. This book helps solidify my belief. Though dry in some parts, it is overall a very good read and I recommend it to believers and skeptics alike.
