An enjoyable departure from a traditional narrative format.

The first novel is a great re-working of the dragon story: filled with the naval milieu of the time, at least 2-d characters, and some wonderful action. Books 2 and 3 are fine but lack the vim and vigor of the first.

If I think about the whole story, it is incredibly sad. The characters are broken, ashamed, lonely, and devastated by the many tragic losses in their lives. I say this as I look back and think about the "whole story," but the young narrator's perspective made reading the novel not unbearably heavy. Oscar Schell has lost his father in the 9/11 tragedy. He and his father had an extraordinary relationship. Both are geniuses in their own right, and their relationship is fascinating and unique. Oscar takes his death incredibly hard and is having a difficult time moving forward. When Oscar finds a mysterious key in an envelope with "Black" written on it, he goes on a quest to find the purpose of the key with hopes of finding out more about his dad. His plan is to visit each person in NYC whose last name is Black. Each of his visits brought me closer to the amazing character of Oscar. His ability to flatter, listen, interpret, and relate to the various "Blacks" he encounters on his journey is amazing! He is truly a character - read the book and you'll see what I mean! There is also an underlying story of Oscar's grandparents. Their story is sad and tragic in a way that IS heavy, painful, and ultimately frustrating. The grandfather's inability to move past his loss causes other people pain, and I can't forgive him for his selfishness. I think it is a good comment on Foer's writing that I'm actually so mad at one of his characters. And Oscar!...I wish he was my neighbor! I love that he is a real person in my mind! I love that this book made me laugh and cry. I love that I now have the term "heavy boots" in my vocabulary!

** spoiler alert ** I am new to zombie books, having found my way to Breathers via Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and then Word War Z. But I don't think I'm cut out for the sub-genre of zombie books where, like in Breathers, the zombies are the main characters. It's an interesting twist, certainly, but when they start eating humans, and weighing the pros and cons and moral dilemmas of eating humans, it gets just a little too gross for me (and zombie books are already too gorey for me to read during mealtimes or before bedtime). I think I definitely prefer my zombies to be mindless monsters, and my main characters to be the humans who are fighting for survival as they rid the world of the zombie threat. That said, I really wanted the zombie characters in Breathers to make it, to win their civil rights struggle and get equal rights with humans. The book was funny and clever and strange and gross and creative--I just can't hack it as a reader of books where sentient zombies eat their parents, that's all.

Keri Arthur had me hooked since book one of her Riley Jenson Guardian Series. I love the fact that Riley is part vampire and part werewolf. And I have always loved her Quinn!

sorry to say, not that great. to be fair, he wrote it a long time ago, long before his mainstream success was where it is today, but i just didn't love it. i also read it a few years ago now, and don't really remember much about it, just being disappointed, but maintaining that i still love jon stewart.

I would consider myself a fan of the series now, so I enjoyed the book in the sense that it was more - more of the stories, more of the characters I've grown attached to, etc. But in all honesty I felt it lacked the literary soul of the first book and the novelty of the second. Auel wrote this book with the practiced style of one who knows how to please a following of the type of readers who, nowadays, would probably spend the time between books reading and writing huge amounts of sexually charged fanfiction. There was definitely an "Oh, this is what they like? Well, give them more!" type of attitude, but hey, I still cried at the sad parts, so who am I to talk? And yes, I'm totally reading the next one. Oh, Jean...you are a crafty spellbinder.
