The book reads like a historical book. Lots of names, places, people, things are described. Once you get by that fact, and keep the names straight, it does have a very good story to it. I think it's hard to start reading for that fact, plus it's written in old english. Which can be hard to get into. It took me 3 tries before I actually read it all the way through.

I have just started reading Cathy Lamb's books and really love her characters. They are amazingly detailed, entertaining, and the types of people anyone would want in their life. I enjoyed this book more than Julia's Chocolates, it is one of those books you can't put down.

all of chabon's previous work was building up to this book. And I thought it was worth the wait.

** spoiler alert ** I've been meaning to read this classic for years. It always shows up on those "100 best books of all time lists" and I've felt guilty for not reading it. I enjoyed it. It's beautifully written, although Hardy does lay it on pretty thick sometimes. Also, it occasionally reads like propaganda for his particular social agenda - I wish that had been a little less transparent. I often felt anxious, that the book should move forward more quickly, instead of endless languishing on passages about Tess punishing herself. But I think it's written that way on purpose and I appreciate what it's doing. But ultimately Tess irritated me too much, too much of a victim. So many problems could have been avoided with a little less pride, a little more self-worth. [Warning: spoiler ahead] It was sad, but I wasn't really emotionally connected to it. The breaking point for me was when immediately after parting with Tess, Clare meets Izz on the road and proposes to take her as his lover. I found it totally bizarre. For me, that made the story about two fools instead of true love thwarted by the rules of an unfair society.
The shortcomings of this book have been noted. I could not put it down, yet I agree with all the criticism to which I would add - why tell the wife she had a stillborn twin? Why not say it was one live birth thereby eliminating the need for all the subsequent coverup. Then only the fathered would be tortured rather than both of them. I also can't see how that mother would ever have been able to handle a child with disabilities. Yes, she was strong enough to run a successful business but she seemed to have a very fragile psyche. Would it have survived special needs? I was amazed that it kept me engaged and reading straight through as I was really disappointed when I was done. Unusual combo.

Lydia Asher creeps into the lair of the vampire Don Simon Ysidro. Her husband, James, is missing and Lydia suspects he is on the trail of vampires. She solicits assistance from Don Simon and they travel to Constantinople along with a companion Don Simon beguiles into escorting Lydia. James has actually seen one of his enemies from his former life as a spy in "The Great Game" of statesmanship played across Europe before the First World War. He followed Karolyi to Turkey and uncovers a plot to overthrow the Great Bey who is the vampire master of Constantinople. Interesting information regarding the intrigues that thrived among the diplomats before the War to end all Wars.

An interesting take on found free or flea market finds (as the title suggests) and how to put them together into collections. I like it. Lots of ideas for how to decorate in the lodge or cabin style. Tereasa Surratt and her husband bought an old summer camp that had quite the colorful history: it was a speakeasy, a brothel, a hotel, a Catholic retreat, and then a summer camp. As such, when they bought it, there were lots of interesting bits and bobs left behind for them to sort through. She details the journey of putting it all together in collections and using the stuff. A lovely book on living with the stuff you might collect.
Silvia C. 2/27/11 Book Review Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan The Joy Luck Club was an inspiring novel about people, (Chinese women) sharing stories and struggles about their lives in a group, called the "Joy Luck Club." The book had very intense stories, for example, a mother of a young girl who died, a girl leaving China to go to America to raise a daughter, a young girl getting married at sixteen and being extremely unhappy, and much more. Even though some people seem to like this book, I actually did not enjoy it. I'm normally a fan of Chinese novels, but this one, I didn't like. For me, it was really confusing, and it switched a lot between the past and present. I like it when books do that, but the transition between the past and present wasn't good, well, to me at least. Another thing I did not like about this book was it didn't interest me that much. Sure, some parts were interesting, but it just wasn't interesting enough for me. I'm really hard to please when it comes to books, so I didn't find it surprising when I realized I didn't like this book. If I were to recommend this book to someone, I would recommend to someone who likes slow-ish books. That was another thing I didn't like about this book, it was just too slow for me. I'd also recommend it to young adults and high schoolers. For someone younger then 14 to read this book, it'd just be too overwhelming for them, in my opinion. I was overwhelmed while reading it, there was just so much to remember. I'm hoping the next person who reads this book will enjoy it!
