This book stays more 'on topic' than the other gardening books I've read recently. At least three fourths of the book is about building and maintaining the square foot gardens, including trellis plans, wire tops to varmint proof the gardens, and bottoms to keep out tree roots, moles and gophers. Only a small section at the end spent on the plants that might go into the garden. I thought this book was worth the money spent to buy it.

I like Gregor Demarkian mysteries, but they don't usually make me laugh out loud. This one did - twice. I am still snickering over the idea of dozens of hamsters in a person's mind. The story revolves around the attempted murder of a reality show host. I liked the way it poked fun at the concept, even if I do watch some of the blasted things. The minor plot has to do with the mystery of a little old lady in a coma and the woman who was living with her. That had some interesting twists to it. I like Haddam's writing and I think she improves with each story. I like that she can fool me, even when I'm SURE I've figured out the whole story.

One of the strangest books I've read. The arrangement of the story is so much part of the story. A story within a story, one guy's obsession about arranging/editing the story he finds in bits and pieces in a guy's apartment. The story is about a house that is larger on the inside than the outside and the family that moves into it. Pick it up if you have the chance to look at it, even if you don't read it.

A few months ago I read Just Passin' Through by Winton Porter after reading an article about the book in a magazine. It is about a man who packed up his family and moved to North Georgia to run a store along the Appalachian Trail. Before reading the book, the only thing I really knew about the trail was that the pastor at my church had a goal to hike the whole thing and every few months he would leave to hike for a few days. I really didn't know how long it was or where it went. After reading Porter's book, I was intrigued. I liked getting a glimpse into the culture of the hikers, most especially the thru-hikers that attempt to walk all 2,000+ miles from Georgia to Maine (or the other way around) at one time. This book piqued my interest and stayed with me. Then Jenny tells me about Becoming Odyssa. I wanted to read another book about the trail, but hadn't yet. I immediately put this on my list, but it took a while to get around to it. In the meantime, I met a lovely woman, Em, who has thru-hiked the AT and I am SO MAD I hadn't read this first. Just Passin' Through gave me a very small peek into life on the AT. After reading Odyssa I have a million more questions for Em and I wish our paths would cross again. I have no idea why I liked this book so much. I am not an outdoorsy person, have "hiked" probably three times in my life, but this book made me want to get out there! I don't want to hike the whole thing, but I feel the need to at least get out there and see the white blazes for a day.
