Do not read while pregnant! I had to stop. I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to this book. It should come with a warning.

Great book up until the end... no idea why the author felt compelled to wrap everything up in a nice little bow -- kind of ruined the effect of writing about "the human condition."

Blood Meridian is just about the perfect example of what literature can do that other art-forms cannot. Cormac McCarthy wrings every last drop of power and beauty from the English language - his descriptive ability is second to none, and his evocation of the North American landscape is rapturous, though he is as adept at describing the monstrous as he is the gorgeous. His characters are deftly sketched against this potent backdrop, insignificant in scale but remarkable in deed. The violence perpetrated by his characters is harrowing - the aforementioned landscape beautifully carved by McCarthy's divine prose is drenched with a river of blood, stained by the depraved human souls who tread arrogantly across it. It is not just McCarthy's peerless descriptive powers which raise the book to greatness, though, but his explorations of the human spirit and its struggle with mortality and(in)significance. There are passages which seem to scour the very edges of human contemplation and beyond that into the infinite - McCarthy's juxtaposition of the universal and the intimate can be deeply unsettling and therefore deeply satisfying. There is no levity to be found in this book, no safety net, no escape route - it is relentlessly and uncompromisingly bleak which, for me, is a great strength. Blood Meridian is a sustained death-stare into the eye of humanity, God/god and existence itself, and as such i'm immensely grateful to Cormac McCarthy for his ambition and fearlessness, as well as his profound literary gifts.

I'm not really into horror books but I still decided to read this. Firstly it was AWESOME. this book really scared me with the rhyme and the dark man and I didn't want to know what happened at the end but still I kept reading. Recommeded for: PEOPLE THAT LIKE HORROR

I really enjoy Kingsolver's writing style. This book was a quick read with interesting characters. I believe part of my enjoyment came from the fact that I was visiting AZ at the time, which is the setting for good part of the story.

While clean sexually, still a lot of bad language. I just picked up this paperbook last second before I checked out some books for Isabel and was hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Wasn't. Warning, here come some spoilers... Anyway, the whole thing is kind of "Serendipity"-esque (the movie) with the main characters always coming close to meeting, and never doing it until the last page...literally the last paragraph is them walking towards each other. It really bugged me because I enjoyed both of characters a lot and wanted to see how they interacted. I think it would have really enhanced the novel if it were made into 2 parts, one of their separate lives, and then another of them together. They had enough cultural and upbringing differences to make their relationship really interesting and fun to see how they resolved it...but that's not how the book was and obviously, to only give it 2 stars, I didn't really like that. :) Not sure if I'd read any more by this author, probably not...

The first of the Commisario Brunetti books, though I have read many others previously. A satisfyingly complex story that explores the moral dimensions of justice. Some of the characters who figure strongly in the later books (Vianello, Signorina Elettra, Lieutenant Scarpa)are not here. A great series.

Elisa Morgan's book has certainly opened my eyes to all the ways I've been missing to share my faith with others. Really sound, solid Biblical foundation is provided to affirm that God is a vital part of who we are and what we share about that relationship with others.
