The second book in The Kingkiller Chronicles was a dense, heavy, but thoroughly enjoyable read. It took me a while to get used to the flow of writing in the first book of this series and I knew (from reading the first book) that The Wise Man's Fear wasn't something I was going to fly through. Therefore, I didn't start reading it right away because I knew I had to be in the right mood to read a book that I had to...no wanted to pay close attention to every beautifully constructed paragraph, sentence, and word. Maybe because I knew what to expect, maybe because the world was already established, when I DID finally start reading this book I was immediately back into its world and its story. It took a little while for my brain to remember some of the details from the first book (and it will be terribly hard to remember everything when the 3rd book finally comes out), but this book was worth the wait! This book took place, once again, at University. We also saw Kvothe go off on his own. In his travels we saw him become a fighter, some of the parts of his back story (that are references in the tavern scenes) start to flesh out. We see him grow into a different person...a more well rounded person. I wish I could say a more grown up person...but that simply wasn't the case. I still spent a good portion of this book cringing at his nativity (or should I say stupidity?), and his arrogance. I still wanted to reach into the book (especially in his dealings with Denna, Ambrose, or certain teachers) and shake some sense into him. But that just shows how engrossed in this world and this story I was in. I also very much liked the ending. While there are still mysteries and still things that are yet to be unraveled, it concluded enough that I don't feel like I am left hanging. So why only 4 stars? (I would actually give it 4.5 star if I could.) The long journey (which takes up the better half of the book) was just that - long. Some of it dragged and I don't think all of it was needed. (That said, the 3rd book will probably illustrate just how needed it all was.) Still, it was long and rambling and just over the line of - it's a little to much - for me to give it a five. Also, for all of those reviews who give this book 1 star - your points are completely valid and I agree with a lot of them. (And your reviews - especially the one featuring pictures of Michael Cera - made me laugh out loud!) However, I simply enjoyed reading this book enough that I could forget/overcome/not notice anything bad about this book!
