1968 was easily the most intense year of my life. The New Left was surging with Johnson's vast escalation of the war, the Democratic Party was splitting in response, and I just barely managed to get on the wave that crashed in the streets of Chicago during the Convention in August, seeing much of it, meeting some of the principals. I'd been working for Eugene McCarthy's campaign since 1967 at about which time I'd also joined the YPSL and the SDS, these divided loyalties reflecting some of the divisions of the time. In June of 1968, however, I went to Honolulu for two months and worked for the campaign there until sneaking back to Chicago for the Convention without telling the parents. Sherrill's Drugstore Liberal was the book for the long flights from Chicago to San Francisco, where I saw hippies all over the place, and from San Francisco to Oahu. A biography of Hubert Humphrey, it reconfirmed, in its portrayal of his career as a red-baiter and Minnesota boss, my commitment to Eugene about whom I'd also been reading a lot. Ironically, on the day before the 1968 election, after months of wearing a Stop HHH button, I actually, upon the urging of friends, went door-to-door for the guy. He was bad, yes, but not as bad as Nixon.

I can't get enough of questions I never thought to ask and intelligent answers to those questions. What affects the color of earwax? How much does my head weigh? Why do pineapples have spines? These are great questions and had I not read this book, I would have never thought to ask these wonderful questions.

She is too old and making a mess of things but no one seems to want to fire her although they all agree she is terrible. When Carlotta is found dead in her room, there are a lot of suspects to check out.

Not only is Mira a rare air witch with the potential for tremendous power, but she is also the target for warlocks who seek to use her in a demon summoning ritual. The only person standing between Mira and a certain death is Jack McAllister, a fire witch who will do anything to protect Mira for reasons that are becoming more and more personal. It has been a while since I read Anya Bast’s excellent Dark Magick series and I’d forgotten how much I enjoy her writing. Bast’s world building is engrossing and her characters have depth and intensity. Not only do Mira and Jack have explosive chemistry in and out of the bedroom, but each has a well-fleshed out background that makes them all the more appealing. My one small nitpick regarding their romance is the annoying keeping secrets trope. Thankfully, it doesn’t overshadow the relationship too much and is resolved quite easily without the equally detestable silly misunderstanding stemming from a lack of communication. The plot is secondary to the romance, which is understandable given the nature of the genre and the relatively short length. Nevertheless, what there is to the story is very intriguing and the set up for the next book has potential. In short, a fast, fun read recommended for lovers of steamy paranormal romance.

Great common sense philosophy on making baby happy (& mom and dad happy). When you are sleep deprived, frustrated, and can't hear yourself think over the crying, it's good to get some common sense reminders. LOVE the missing 4th trimester theory. All the suggestions totally make sense. The shushing and rocking tricks worked best for me with getting my baby to sleep...now if only I could get him to sleep longer.
