I like this book, but I just feel something lacking in it. I didn’t like the ending because it felt so cliche. But I do love the device of reformulating well-known fairytales to subvert childhood naivety of “happily ever after”. That bit I liked, but I didn’t like the main plot at all. Sure, the protagonist is a child, but he is not child-like at all. There isn’t any “growing up” as the synopsis suggested; I felt it was more like being pushed by fate from one corner to another that he was forced to do certain seemingly adult-like things that really is what a child perceives to be “adult”. Sure, he learnt to love his brother, but so? It’s just a little realization that doesn’t quite live up to my expectations.

This book got great reviews and was short-listed for the Man Booker Prize, so I decided to read it. I enjoyed the story very much, but I must confess I skimmed quite a bit. I know I'm not a chimp, but maybe I'm not smart enough to understand everything the way this gentleman writes it (maybe the British thing has something to do with it, too). Anyway, if you want a leisurely read about people with lots of issues, this might be a good choice.

I listened to it on tape, which is a great idea for a book that's brilliant but short and repetitive.

This book fascinated me. It read as fast as a piece of light fiction, but with so much more to it. An incredible, true depiction of life during the Islamic Revolution in Iran, from the point of view of a woman and an academic.

its like a made for movie book, and i heard they butchered the movie when they made it AND they got that sucker, who i've never liked, Tom hanks to star in it. anyway, its an enjoyable read, with a lot of great conspiracy stuff in it, but its not the best literature ever. i'd recommend Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco to anyone who really liked the knights templar/secret society part of it.

Started reading this before I realized it was the last book in a series. I couldn't get really into it or interested in the main character. So I've put it on pause until I can read the others in the series. Which may be never.

Great book, but disappointing ending.

I met the author of this book recently at a handbag event (I still can't believe I go to these things, its kind of horrifying). She seemed pretty cool. I'm curious to check this book out. Aparently all the actor types go through a Hollywood carwash (new teeth, diets, blond hair, the works) before they can work.

Once again, Georgina gets down and dirty with whomever - just to keep her energy, except a mysterious force keeps draining that energy...meaning, Georgie has to keep getting more. The concept is so dirty to begin with that making it even dirtier makes me laugh. Very enjoyable as always. My rant...damn straight I have something to rant about! I'm not angry with Seth, but I am bored with him. No, I get it, Georgie digs the author of her favorite books. I love my authors as well. If I were into girls, I might have a girl-crush on Richelle Mead because I love her that much. The problem is that I don't actually see/read the chemistry between the Georgina and Seth. No, her chemistry is with Carter. Umm, yes, I mean the angel, who's never likely to "fall" for a succubus. I get the irony in that - just as Georgie gets the irony in the angel accidentally burning up her Christmas tree with his cigarrette. See? This stuff is hilarious! So, impossible as it is - that's where I'm at. Here ends the rant.

Jim Dale (Read by) Year of Pub: 2004 Publisher: Random House Audio Publishing Group, New York, NY School Library Journal ( January 01, 2000 ; 0-8072-8118-2 ) Gr 4-7-The magic of Harry Potter lives on in this superb unabridged recording of the first book in the popular fantasy series by J.K. Rowlings. This story of Harry's journey from his miserable home with his aunt and uncle to Hogwarts, the wizardry school where his destiny as a wizard of great potential is made known to him, is ideally suited for reading aloud. This audiobook pairs a good story with a high quality production, and the result is enjoyable. Narrator Jim Dale's English accent and warm, expressive voice create a sense of atmosphere which will enchant listeners of all ages. The reading brings the characters to life, as Dale's voice recreates energetic Hermione, sulky Malfoy, and other characters with expert inflection and pacing. Listeners who have already read the print version book will enjoy hearing all of the magical vocabulary pronounced authoritatively and effortlessly by Dale. Likewise, children who have struggled with the invented names and other "magical" vocabulary in the series may get more enjoyment out of reading the book with audio accompaniment. With the bestseller status of the Harry Potter series, and the high quality of this audio production, this recording deserves a place in all audio collections.-Carolyn Schemick Bailey, Conerly Road School, Somerset, NJ Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
