If Henry Rollins and Raymond Chandler had a love child who wrote noir fantasy novels, they might be something like this. Angry, sarcastic, full of attitude and gallows humor. James Stark was dragged down to hell (alive) by a circle of magicians jealous of his natural abilities. Now, eleven years later, he's back in L.A. (of course) and he's out for revenge. This book was dark, funny and a great read. I already have the second book sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read. I kind of love Kadrey's snarly version of the universe - self-righteous angels, self-absorbed devils and humanity caught in between. With a hero who is mythological whether or not he wants to be. Fun fun fun. (Also, for guys who like urban fantasy without any romance novel angels, this series is for you. It's a full-on testosterone pizza with extra testes for flavor.)

Continuing with the comic book/WWII theme, this Pulitzer Prize winner is one of the best books I've ever read about either. The characters are very real and deeply sympathetic, even though the story often crosses the boundary from the realistic to the fantasic. At first, I found myself flipping pages impatiently to get to the Indiana Jones-esque Escapist passages, but ultimately, this book is about the real adventure of life and the inadequacy of our stories as symbols of true experience. Oh, and comic books. It's also about them.

Rebecca Stead's Newbery Award winning novel, "When You Reach Me," is full of adventure, secrets, and literary fantasy about the future. The story is told from the main characters perspective, Miranda. She is 12 years old and in the 6th grade in the year 1978. She is also a latchkey kid. She lives with her mother and has no father. Her mother has a boyfriend. The story takes place in a community in the city of New York. Has the story evolves we are introduced to different characters that are a part of Miranda's world. These characters live in her neighborhood and attend her school. The rising climax begins when Miranda begins to receive random letters that warn her about events that will occur in the near future that will affect her world. The climax of the story is when Miranda's best friend Sal is saved by "The Laughing Man," a bum who hang's out in her community which turns out to be the person who wrote her all the letters telling her about the future. This bum turns out to be a time traveler which turns out to be a boy named Marcus from her neighborhood. The main character Miranda is affected by all of the character's in the story. We see her struggling with self identity, emotions such as having feelings for boys, and the reality of the world she lives in.

The more time passes, the faster my opinion of this book diminishes. But without it, I would never have seen the biographical featurette that introduced me to Hermione Lee, Our Lady of Literary Biography, and the rest is history, so it can keep three stars just for that.

I loved this book. So inventive. A little sherlock holmes with my fantasy.

a good romp, why it the Tibetans are often the source of the really bad demons? though it did liven up a relatively usual murder mystery

Stories about plagues are not really my cup of tea, so I can't really say this was a book I *enjoyed*. However, although it was sad and frightening, it's also well-written, with plenty of historical details, and I liked the style. I listened to the audio book and the narrator did a great job.

I was surprised by how much I liked this book. I didn't expect to hate it, but I didn't think I'd enjoy it like I did. I really liked the protagonists - Harry, Storm, and Emma. Although, Emma was my least favorite of the three. Something about her just wasn't quite right. And I found the relationship between Harry and Emma a bit hard to swallow. Something about it just didn't seem right to me. But, I'm able to overlook that. The story itself was well-written and very engaging. I especially liked that there were some occurrences I didn't see coming. It's great when a book surprises me and I can't necessarily see what's coming. Gold of Kings was an engaging, fun, and suspenseful story. I had fun reading it, and will be looking for more books by Davis Bunn.

** spoiler alert ** While I was doing my review for this book, my internet decided to restart on me, so I apologize this isn't going to be as good as a review as it would have been. This was a really good book! I do wish that I read the book before I watched the movie, because I was expecting something completely different! In the movie we watch how Noah and Allie met and that is most of the movie, but in the book this is about a paragraph long. This is why I was so surprised that Noah was in his thirties!! What we read in the book is what is happening with Noah and Allie, after Allie leaves and becomes engaged to Lon. So, in the book we really don't see how much they were in love with each other as we see in the movie. I really liked Allie in the movie, but in the book she seemed kind of... pushy... (I would have used a different word, but I don't know if I can put it on this website) Which is ok, if I read the book first. At the end of the book I found it really hard to read, not because it was horrible or badly written, but because it was so sad!! We read about Noah talking about himself withering away and how he is dieing, not to mention the pain he feels when ever he sees Allie forget him. In the last chapter Noah reads a letter that Allie wrote to him when they found out she has Aylztimers (sorry I don't know how to spell that) and it is SO sad! I just about put the book down so I wouldn't have to read all the pain and sadness!! Another thing that took me off guard was at the end of the book Noah and Allie don't die together, like in the movie. I really wish I read this before seeing the movie. I suggest to anyone who wants to read this, read it!! And if you haven't seen the movie yet, don't see it untill after you read the book! I really have to give congrats to Nicholas Sparks for this book!! He is an amazing writer, and I know he would have to do a lot of research to write a story about a couple who are about to die, and who are so much older then he is!! Fantasic writing!!! Love his books!!
