I didn't like this book at all. I felt as if I was reading a porn script. Scenes would end at weird times and didn't necessarily flow well. Also, it seemed not realistic at all.

Excellent! A very sweet book with some interesting history about world war II and the German occupation. Also about people who love to read (who doesn't love that??) and the love of one specific community. I would recommend this to everyone! Very easy and quick read and really enjoyable!

Pop's Bridge by Eve Buntnmg, illustrated by C. F. Payne is an historical fiction picturebook look at the building of the Golden Gate Bridge through the eyes of young Robert whose father is a skywalker, one of the brave, high-climbing ironworkers. Robert's Pop is building it, and Robert is convinced that his pop has the most important job on the crew. Bunting tells this tale, based on real families, from the focus of Robert. Even though Robert's father gives equal credit to the bridge painters, Robert is convinced the steelworkers are the most important. An awful accident makes him realize that equal work and equal danger exist for all bridge workers. The two fathers are given half pieces of the final puzzle piece of the Golden Gate Bridge to complete the puzzle together, celebrating the completion of the bridge. The inclusion of a Chinese American worker in the story is an important historical detail. An author's note about the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge gives added context to the story. Payne's illustrations created in mixed media are beautiful, especially the panoramic shots of the bridge, and of the people of San Francisco. As someone who loves the city of San Francisco, I enjoyed the story, but agree with some other reviewers that there is less of an emotional connection than there could have been, and that the ending is slightly contrived. More details of the relationship between Robert and his father might have helped. This could be useful in schools with units about bridges, bridge building, California and San Francisco. For ages 8 to 13, bridge building, San Francisco, historical fiction, courage, team work themes, and fans of Eve Bunting and C. F. Payne.

Catherine Cookson knows how to build great characters. She dangles them before your emotions and you can't help getting involved in the story. Good read.

A surprisingly fast read, very talky as is the case with many older Russian writers--they don't do much internal work as modern characters, thought all comes out as talk. But wow, Pasternak is so in tune with nature and it's feeling and effects--never thought of him as a nature writer--he's sort of like Kerouac in that way, oddly enough. But many of his plot devices are a little heavy handed, and one doesn't enter into the characters as one does with the greats. It's flawed but absolutely worth reading.

I liked the movie Babylon AD(well up until the last 15 minutes) and so I picked up the book. I liked the book a whole lot more, while the story is similar, the book of course is much deeper. The cast is larger and it doesn't have the "WTF where did the kids come from" moment. I would have rated it higher, unfortunately though some of the descriptions were awful. I think it was a combination translation from the original French novel, and what I interpret as an artificial effort by the author to try and sound more knowledgeable or highbrow, or perhaps the concepts themselves don't transfer directly between the languages as well as Dantec hoped. Whatever the reason, it is a good, truly cyperpunk book, as long as you can get past some of the descriptions.

At long last I finished this monster. I like Dan Simmons. His "Summer of Night" and its sequel "A Winter's Haunting" are favorites of mine. But this didn't work. Too long, no real payoff. The narrator is so drug addled that it's hard to believe a word of the story. And if what Dickens' confesses is believable, then Dickens is a monster, too.
Thrilling! Very fast read, perfect for transatlantic flights, train journeys, or when you have the flu.
