I paused for a couple of months, about 2/3 of the way through this book, because I simply wasn't enjoying it. I had never liked the character of Maria, in the first book of the trilogy (The Rebel Angels), nor found her romance with Arthur very plausible. So I couldn't empathize or really care about the implausible and bizarre predicament they got into in this book. And Shnack -- a thoroughly unlikeable character, as well as her mentor who was equally unlikeable. It seemed that this book was chock-full of unlikeable characters! So I stopped for a while. But once I got back into it, a few weeks ago, I enjoyed it a lot more. I was espcially happy to discover the theme that Robertson Davies espoused quite a lot in his later years: the idea that you must discover your personal myth, the one that fits you and your inner character most truly, and follow it in the way you live your life. Hearing Davies interviewed about this idea a few years ago was what prompted me to develop my own personal myth (the "Island") and begin to explore what it meant in my life. So I felt like I was becoming reacquainted with an old friend. Still, I have to say that the middle book, "What's Bred in the Bone," was the best of the three in this trilogy. I think what finally made me enjoy the last third of "The Lyre of Orpheus" was in fact Darcourt's gradual unravelling of the mysteries Francis Cornish had left behind him after book two. This book was the first Davies book I ever read, and I'm glad I was intrigued enough that I went on to many of his other books. But having read so many now, I have to say that this is not high on the list of my favourite Davies books.

This is, I think, Salinger's best book. Begins and ends with a suicide, but oh well! In particular, "Perfect Day for Bannanafish" and "For Esme with Love and Squalor" and, maybe, "Teddy," are just amazing stories. There are about 15 stories I've read in my life that seem just perfect, and "For Esme" is one of them. It's probably the most affecting story about war that I've read (on par with "The Things They Carried"), though it actually dodges the war, itself -- i.e. the story takes place immediately before and after the war, and there's a large dark narrative hole between the two sides. We end wit the broken and painful aftermath. Much of this collection of stories is really about the ways in which WWII destroyed the soldiers who survived.

I am sorry, but I could absolutely not stand Holden Caulfield. I kept wanting to shake him and tell him to grow up. And I was even supposed to identify with him, being all confused and adolescent. Also, the word "crumby" drove me up the f-ing wall.

While this book is sappy at parts and almost soap-opera-like with it's dramatically intertwined characters, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the last couple chapters. I was excited to see how things would play out. I couldn't put it down. The events in the story are unlikely and the characters don't react realistically to the situations they face, but for some reason it didn't matter. The way it was told and the tone the book set made it all right. The author successfully achieved suspension of disbelief and, ultimately, that is what allowed it to be a good book.

Brilliant insight, just the title caught my attention.
Jasbir, aka Jazz, is a nice girl with good grades and strict parents. But then her parents hear that she hugged a boy, which is a no-no in their Indian and Sikh mindset. Her parents become matchmakers and search for a man to curb her lust. Jazz meets the young man her parents found for her, but under the surface he really does not fit her parents' ideas of suitability. Then there's the new boy at school, Tyler, who she's weak in the knees for. Jazz also gets involved in Auntie Kinder's love life: Kinder's parents caught her in the heat of the moment with an unsuitable young man, they married her off to someone else, and now Auntie Kinder is single. Jazz is searching online for the unsuitable young man from Auntie Kinder's past to hook the two up. Jazz makes a mess of things, getting into deeper trouble with friends and family, and it was delightful to watch her stumble, fall and pick herself up. Romantic and humorous, with a great teen voice, this novel has a balance of light and serious elements. It's a fun and fast-paced read.

Loved this book. Great historical read about one of the most interesting times in American History.
